Possible River Severn Record Chub
Could this be the biggest chub ever caught from the River Severn?
That is the question being asked following the accidental capture of the colossal 7lb 7oz specimen by Dean Aston.
The Wolverhampton angler bagged it during a perch fishing session after he had baited a likely looking spot with red maggots via a bait dropper.
Using a link leger with 6lb line and a size 8 hook, Dean had to wait only half-an-hour before his tip was pulling round as the specimen tore off with his lobworm hookbait.
“I guessed it wasn’t a perch when it swam straight towards a nearside snag, but it wasn’t until I got it out that I knew it was special,” he said.
Current Severn records for the species are not documented in any detail, but experts believe this is the biggest-ever chub from the waterway.
Chub Study Group secretary Iain said: “There have been lots of sixes and the odd seven in the past, but nothing like this.
“It doesn’t surprise me, though, as the fish in the Severn are getting bigger all the time.”
