• Bristol Avon, Kellaways, Chippenham, Wiltshire

A days roving this wild stretch of river can result in numbers of chub hitting your landing net. The fish average around the 2-3lb mark and are often more than obliging. They take simple baits such as bread, cheese paste or worms presented on short link-legers.

• Kings Weir, River Lea, Broxbourne, Hertfordshire

Downstream of this well-known big fish weir pool some very large chub can be found. Already this season fish weighing over 8lb have been caught with multiple 7lb-plus specimens also reported. Float fishing maggots can work well, as can legered pellets and boilies. Take time feeding the swim before casting out to allow the chub to gain confidence. This stretch is reserved for members only and is safely enclosed within a gated area. When you become a member you are given a key that allows access to this stretch. These chub also visit the weirpool area which is available on a day ticket.

River Thames, Abingdon-on-Thames, Oxfordshire

Lots of good chub have been caught from this area of the Thames in past seasons, with fish over 7lb reported. Try the weir area for the bigger fish or fish across to the downstream boats.  Spraying maggots and fishing the waggler is a good method. For those who wish to use a more static approach baiting a swim with mashed bread in a cage feeder is another proven winner.

River Tone, Fast Stretch, Taunton, Somerset

As the name suggests this narrow and quick section of the River Tone is alive with chub in the 2-4lb bracket. In matches bag weights often go to over 30lb of hard fighting chevins. Trotted maggot, hemp and casters is the most commonly used methods. If you are after the better fish its worth trying a roving approach with legered bread, cheese paste or worm.

This wild river runs through some picturesque areas of the Devonshire countryside. It’s the perfect roving angler’s river with a variety of swims to target. Fish to over 5lb have been reported in previous seasons as well as numbers of smaller fish averaging 3lb.

• The Royalty Fishery, Hampshire Avon, Christchurch, Dorset

It’s been a great season for big chub catches on this famous fishery. Traditionally better known for its barbel fishing, this season has seen chub of 7lb 14oz hit the bank. Boilies are a great bait for these fish and a stealthy approach is often required to tempt one. For those who prefer a more traditional approach, trotted maggots take more than their fair share of chevins averaging 5lb-plus.

What can we say about this place that hasn’t already been said? Perhaps the most famous fishery in the country, and with good reason, here at the Angling Times we are inundated with catch stories of whopping royalty chub! They fall to a variety of methods, being pressured fish small baits such as maggots tend to lead the scoring, delivered by either trotting or feeder tactics.

River Thames, Oxford

Over the last few years old father Thames has thrown up some outstanding chub! It’s a big river and the fish will need some tracking down, many anglers decide to prebait for them, boilies are often the chosen bait for this. Ledgering is the main method used, with plenty of chub tending to fall to barbel tactics. A noted stretch is The Channel in the Botley Road area, which has produced fish to over 8lb in the past, and is still a regular haunt.

The lower reaches of this river is well known for its monster chub, having produced record matching fish to 9lb 5oz! The infestation of crayfish in the chevins diet, is almost certainly the reason for these exceptional growth rates. Noted stretches for these monster chub include the famous Kings Weir Fishery, where 9 pegs are accessible on a pre booking day ticket basis, and the 35 pegs downstream available to members only.

River Loddon, Stanford End, Reading

This feature filled river is well suited to a classic roving approach, targeting likely looking overhangs and deeper holes where the chub reside, which run well into 7lb. The mile long stretch at Stanford End, which is run by Farnham Angling Society, is regarded as one of the best stretches of small river in the country. They also own two other stretches that shouldn’t be ignored, having produced fish to 7lb 4oz in the past.

This list wouldn’t be complete without mentioning the famous Kennet, which like many southern rivers has produced enormous chub! Reading & District Angling Association own the rights to the Kennet at Burghfield, which is accessible to all on a day ticket. The fish run well into 6lb here, however further upstream at Calcot 7lb-plus fish are a real possibility.

River Gt. Ouse, Radwell, Bedfordshire

This picturesque tree lined section is ideal for the roving approach, perhaps best described as a stalkers paradise. The fishing here is by no means easy, being a long stretch with so many features location can prove tricky, but once found they are catchable, pre baiting is often a paying tactic. This extra effort is certainly worth the reward though, with the chub of a lifetime on the cards! The club also run a section at Kempton which is producing lots of chub over 6lb!

River Ivel, Biggleswade Common, Bedfordshire

A small streamy section once famed for its barbel, but since their decline in recent years the chub have taken the limelight with fish to over 7lb now being caught. The bigger fish along this stretch tend to be caught from the deeper sections. The Ivel Protection Association own the fishing rights, and access is gained by affiliating with a member club.

River Wensum, Norfolk

Many anglers will have grown up watching John Wilson fishing this very river for its resident chub, which still inhabit the waterway. There are some free stretches here, notably Hellesdon Mill which holds good numbers of chub, areas upstream at Ringland and further afield at Lyng can hold fewer fish, but specimens well into the 6lb bracket. Best advice is to speak to the local tackle shops.

This meandering back channel is a stalkers dream! A single rod rule makes it perfectly suited to a roving approach, seeking out every possible likely looking spot on the 1km stretch. It’s advised to use a small amount of bait fishing for a bite at a time, there is a couple of swims however where a swim could be built with trotting tactics. The chub are here in good numbers, with specimens to 6lb-plus.

River Severn, Bridgnorth, Shropshire      

The Middle Severn at Hampton Loade is a renowned spot for chub over the winter months, when the resident barbel aren’t so active! The stretch is perfect for both float or feeder fishing, try trotting flake under overhanging trees and into deeper holes for best results. It fishes best with an extra foot or two of water, and don’t ignore the inside margin as plenty of fish hold here.

Aramstone Fishery boasts a two mile section of this beautiful river, which like all of the Wye is full of chub! Location at this time of year is paramount, once found they are catchable in good numbers. Feeder fishing is the most popular tactic, although some anglers do present baits on trotting methods. Every year there is an abundance of accidental captures of big chub to barbel anglers on this river. With the amount of high protein pellet and boilie entering the system it’s no surprise the chub have exceeded weights of 8lb, with regular 6lb and 7lb fish making an appearance. Specimen tactics may be the way to go for a monster, as most sections holding good numbers of smaller chub, which will produce great sport on lighter tackle. Areas at Fiskerton and Rolleston are fishable on a day ticket.

Middlewich Joint Anglers own the fishing rights to the river upstream and downstream of the Byley Bridge, a stretch boasts a massive head of chub which can be caught on an array of tactics. There is a good depth here making it ideal for running a stickfloat, building the swim by feeding maggots little and often for bags of fish to around 4lb. A roving approach fishing with traditional baits will also score.

A great river for bags of chub, simple trotting tactics produce plenty of bites, classic baits such as hemp and caster or maggots fed little and often for best results. Areas around Morton-on-Swale are noted spots, the fishing here is controlled by Northallerton AC who own four miles of the river, the section below Morton bridge is available on a day ticket.

The ‘stream water stretch’ of the Ure at Ripon boasts an impressive head of chub, big bags can be expected with weights exceeding 100lb not unheard of. Maggots, casters and bread are the favoured baits, best delivered on trotted float tactics. The fishing is run by Ripon Piscatorial Association.

The river at Boston Spa is renowned for its quality stamp of resident chub, which in the past has produced fish to over 7lb, with 5lb and 6lb fish a real possibility.
