Massive tuna boated on fly gear!
Fly anglers looking for the ultimate challenge should check out this picture of Scot Calitri cradling a sensational 70lb Bluefin tuna which he hooked while fishing off Long Island, New York.
The mighty specimen was one of a brace of tuna boated during a trip aboard Robin Calitri’s boat, ‘C Sic Again’, from a mark to the east end of the south shore, the other being a 60lb’er taken on a light spinning outfit by family friend Vincent Catalano.
Robin said: “We were about eight miles south of Montauk Point when we saw the first tuna splashes. Vincent hooked up on his first cast with a pink 'slug-go' plastic lure, but the fish spat the hook out after ten minutes. On the very next cast another tuna took his bait on the surface, and 35 minutes the 60lb’er was boated.
“I positioned the boat near an active group of tuna and Scot made a perfect cast. Immediately a fish chased and Scot was on with a beast. After a one-hour battle, a wonderful 70lb’er was landed and released. We saw turtles and porpoises, even touching the friendly creatures with our hands as they swam in our bow wake. It was quite a day!"
