Warmer weather sparks huge uplift in fishing day ticket sales
The angling sector has finally bucked the economic downturn, with many fisheries and tackle shops reporting record spring takings.
After one of the coldest winters in decades, many in the industry feared a tough 2011 but the unseasonably warm weather during the extended Bank Holiday has renewed hopes of a recovery.
Cudmore Fisheries in Staffordshire reported a record-breaking spring, and Bury Hill Fisheries in Dorking, Surrey also saw more day-ticket anglers come through the doors during April than ever before. Oxford’s Linear Fisheries was another complex that experienced unprecedented day-ticket sales.
But it wasn’t just venues that enjoyed the surprising boom. Fishing Warehouse, one of the UK’s biggest online tackle shops which is based at Llyn Y Gors Fishery, says that sales are 53 per cent up on this time last year and it has recently had to dedicate all its staff to its online and on-site shops to keep up with demand.
“The winter weather hit our sport hard and understandably anglers have been praying for better weather and are raring to go. This has resulted in a great start to the spring for many people within the industry,” said Cyril Brewster, Cudmore owner and chairman of Premier Fisheries.
“Not only my complex, but many others have seen a big increase in day ticket sales. I’m in constant contact with many key players in the fishing trade and they have reported some outstanding sales too,” he said.
Owner of Lyn Y Gors Fishery and Fishing Warehouse, Kevin Coe, said: “We’ve been up every month since the beginning of January and there has been so much demand for tackle and bait that everyone employed at the fishery has had to lend a hand just to get the tackle out and keep stock on the shelves.
“It’s really starting to feel like the sport is finding its feet after a difficult winter.”
Despite experiencing record day-ticket sales and admitting to being ‘immensely positive’ about the recent upturn in both the tackle and fishery industries, David De Vere, owner of Bury Hill Fisheries, is of the opinion that the sport still finds itself in a very fragile position.
“The warm start to the spring is just what angling needed and it’s great that people are getting out on the bank,” he said. “But it’s still very tough out there and it’s vital that every angler does what they can to support the industry and their tackle shops.”

Save £100 on any rod in the amazing TF Gear Nan-Tec range
More and more commercial fishery anglers have switched on to short 10ft Feeder rods in recent seasons, but few will be using a rod as accomplished as this new Compact Nan-Tec 10ft Feeder rod from TFGear.
For longer range fishing with heavier feeders, methods, and hitting far bank marks without having to strain yourself, these 10ft long rods are spot on.
The use of Nan-Tec carbon technology means they’re powerful without being poker-like, and with an incredible action they have the ability to play big fish, yet still retain the priceless ability to handle refined, light presentations too.
Supplied with 2oz, 3oz, and 4oz tips, the two-piece Compact Nan-Tec 10ft Feeder rod is a real all-rounder of a rod that will be equally at home on big, open water lake, day ticket stillwaters, and medium-sized rivers.
The story behind TFGear’s Nan-Tec rods
Longer casts, more power, better fishing. This was the brief TFGear set themselves in designing their new range of rods.
Manufactured using the highest quality carbons, premium components and by utilizing the latest technology, Total Fishing Gear are able to offer a unique range of the finest rods available.
All the rods have been tested on-the-bank by the country’s carp anglers including the legendary Dave Lane, and a host of top matchmen.
This means the Nan-Tec rods are perform like a dream for their specific tasks, and have plenty of power in reserve should something out of the ordinary pick up your bait.
The modern fishery is a demanding place and these rods meet these demands with ease.
What is Nan-Tec?
Applying Carbon Nano Tube, or CNT technology, creates a stronger resin distribution to help eliminate any weakness in the blank to create rods with significantly increased strength and impact resistance without adding significant weight to the blank.
On the bank this new Nan-Tec technology translates into an incredible power to weight ratio, improved casting ability, incredible fish playing performance, high rod strength, and a durability that means this rod will last you season after season.
Our verdict
“Ideal for longer range fishing on commercials and small to medium method feeders, this is a truly beautiful rod to fish with.
“An incredible bargain at £49.99 – high recommended.”

If you are looking for an unbreakable float, feeder or carp rod you really ought to check out the fantastic new range of In-Destruct rods.

Billed as ‘unbreakable’, the rod has impressive levels of power for casting and playing big fish back to the net.
But this rod isn’t a ‘poker’, the unique blank has a lovely through action which just keeps on bending, meaning you can get away with using lighter mainlines and hooklengths and therefore improving your presentation.

The new In-Destruct-X rod range is a trio of rods perfect for commercials and carp waters.

Daiwa launches two new flagship fishing seatboxes
Daiwa has launched two super-modern seatboxes this week, including a new flagship level Tournament box for match anglers and a traditional, ‘practical’ box that pleasure anglers will love.
The Tournament 400SB is packed with features, including a dual-frame with a top tier and sliding tackle unit below.
The split level modular design has a huge storage capacity within two shallow accessory side trays and two 40mm full width storage areas in the top unit alone.
The removable base unit has a further four front drawers and a deep 40mm storage area underneath the handled lid.
Three independent spirit levels ensure that the box can always be set up level, something made easier by having fully extendable telescopic legs too.
A solid, sliding footplate is held securely in place once fully extended by small hand-wheels just behind the front leg brackets. For carriage it slides neatly underneath the main frame.
A standout feature of the 400SB box is a new tension system that, combined with the coating and grooving on the legs, results in totally secure ‘locked’ leg that won’t ever slip under pressure.
Transporting this massive box around is made easier with its own wheel kit barrow system.
However, I was a little disappointed with this, as to fit and remove the wheels the box needs to have the legs fully extended, before tilting it over and fitting the wheels.
Other than that little gripe, this is a top-quality box at a very reasonable price, considering what you can pay for a seatbox these days.
Daiwa 150SB – a real all-rounder
Daiwa’s new 150SB is one of the best all-round tackle boxes to hit the market in recent years.
This more traditional-styled tackle box system has an almost retro look and feel about it, although it still offers many modern-day features, such as an easy sliding footplate and super stable round legs.
The deeper base unit is easily able to house bigger tackle items such as reels, and will be of particular use to river anglers, who may need to carry a few spare reels as well as extra spools for floatfishing and legering.
The four-drawer configuration offers two shallow winder trays that are accessible from either side, while the deeper front drawers can house all your smaller accessories.
There’s also a decent sized area directly underneath the seat, and this could be used to store floats and feeders, or hooklength boxes, catties and pole pots.
The Daiwa 150SB is a tackle box that has been designed to suit the all-round angler, and at the very reasonable asking price it delivers the goods: it is sure to find many admirers this forthcoming season.

Big barrow hits Go Fishing shop
Loads of match and carp anglers have switched on to using barrows for transporting their kit from carp to swim and this new Carp Cart Mk2 barrow is one of the best on the market.
And this week it’s just half price in the Go Fishing Shop.
The Carp Cart Mk2 is big, strong, and has room for carp luggage and tackle, or a seatbox, carryall and rods on top too.
It also comes with two roomy tackle bags which clip on and off the cart and can be used to store more accessories, baits, metalware, pole rollers, tackle boxes, or even your food and valuables.
The strong main frame has folding side and front panels which are designed to keep your kit in place over bumpy ground and this barrow is easy to steer over rough banks thanks to the twin handles and wheels.
Unlike single wheeled barrows these two pump up wheels allow the barrow to ride over the bumps and around obstacles without fuss or toppling over.
Angling Times’ Steve Fitzpatrick has been using the Carp Cart for nearly a full season now.
He said: “Once only used by carp anglers, more match and pleasure anglers have switched from trolleys to barrows in recent seasons as they found they’re easier to move around than an upright trolley, especially when loaded with a heavy seatbox.
“For £50 this is a real bargain that will last you years.”
The Carp Cart Mk2 folds down flat for transporting in the boot of your car or storage at home and can be rebuilt ready to go in under a minute.

Is this the world’s most expensive fishing reel?
The most expensive fishing reel in the world will be offered for sale next month during an auction of the finest collection of antique tackle ever to grace the sport.
Lifelong collector Graham Turner is calling time on his passion after spending more than 35 years amassing an enviable assortment of priceless rods, reels, lures and other items.
At the vanguard of the long awaited sale is what the 75-year-old calls ‘The Holy Grail’ of reels – an Ustonson Original Multiplying Winch – a forerunner to the modern multipliers dating back to 1762, which carries an estimate of £25,000 to £35,000, although many are predicting that it could fetch considerably more.
Among the other prize lots sure to attract hefty bids from the hundreds of collectors descending upon the London salesroom from all over the world is a set of rods previously belonging to the 4th Earl Spencer (1798-1857) – the ancestor of the late Princess Diana.
Also on offer will be what is being billed as the ‘world’s finest display of British lures’, a cased collection of 48 artificial baits which was last sold in 1999 for £29,900, but which is expected to attract a far higher bid this time around.
Graham, who has 500 lots on offer at the sale, told Angling Times why he had decided to sell up.
“Most of the stuff is kept in banks these days, so I’m getting little benefit from it.
“The fun is in the collecting – once you reach your goal, the appeal begins to wear off. It’s like a football team winning the European Cup – once it’s been achieved, you have to start all over again, and I’m too old to do that,” said Graham.
“Plus, the wife has this idea that I’m going to go before her, so she doesn’t want to be left having to sort it all out!” he joked.
The sale, which will take place at Angling Auctions’ HQ in London on March 26, is expected to attract interest from all over the globe, and one of those attending will be prominent UK-based antique tackle expert, Chris Sandford.
“The sale is sure to be well attended because there is some interesting stuff on view. The case of 48 lures by the Wyers brothers in particular could really fly. I’m really looking forward to see how it all pans out,” said Chris.

BIG PIT EXTREME REEL - £40 OFF NOW!
Stillwater’s Extreme BP12000 is a high quality Big Pit reel which punches massively above it’s £99.99 price tag, and is now on offer to Go Fishing users for just £59.99.
It has been designed with the help of some of the sport’s top carp and specimen anglers and ticks all the boxes in performance, design, and looks.
With £40 off the full RRP it also comes at a sensible price too, especially when you see the extras which are standard
The Stillwater Extreme BP12000 has an incredible 13+1 Ball Bearings and comes with two long cast alloy spools, a choice of two handle options, a matt black rubberised finish and a Power drive gearing system for greater strength and higher torque.
“This reel may not have a ‘big’ brand name stuck to the side of it but believe me it knocks many of them for six,” confirmed Angling Times’ Steve Fitzpatrick.
“You also get a heck of a lot of reel for your money with two long cast alloy spools, a choice of two handles, and finely crafted insides which boast 13+1 ball bearings.
Big pit reels are a must-have for carp, pike and specimen fishing these days as they give you loads of power for playing fish but more importantly they offer a huge spool size which helps to aid longer casts.
The choice of handles is a nice touch too. Some carp anglers position their rods so close on pods they prefer to use reels with folding handles and this reel comes with a choice of two handles which means you can fish with a traditional power handle set up or a quick fold power handle.
“To get a serious Big Pit reel for under 60 quid is remarkable, and for me this is where the smart money goes,” added Steve.
