12lb 1oz River Don barbel taken on boilie and feeder tactics

After turning his attentions to a stretch of the River Don which he hadn’t fished before at the start of the season, Steve Hurst has enjoyed a string of good catches - the most recent this 12lb 1oz barbel.

The 37-year-old, Rotherham-based rod regularly recast his Mainline Baits Activ-8 boilie in conjunction with a feeder filled with groundbait and pellets to a gravel slope on the edge of a deep gulley.

“The fight was excellent and it kept charging up and down the margins,” Steve told Angling Times. “I’ve been smashed up by a few fish which I think were carp, and I’m planning on having a go for them now.”

He beat his prize, which was just over 1lb short of the river record, with a size 10 Korda Choddy hook and a 5ft fluorocarbon hooklink.

37lb 9oz surface caught pb

Darren Underwood claimed that ‘no carper should go fishing without a bag of dog biscuits,’ when he banked his biggest ever surface-caught specimen – this cracking mirror which topped the scales at 37lb 9oz.

The 33-year-old, from Cambridgeshire was staring a blank session in the face at his local Fenland Fisheries’ Willow Lake when he and many other anglers around him fishing bottom baits struggled for bites.

But just a few hours before he was set to pack up his gear he decided to start feeding Chum Mixers to see if he could encourage the carp to start feeding on the top, and that’s when his fortunes turned around.

He soon had a group of fish mopping up his free offerings and cast out a cut down Dynamite Baits pop-up boilie hair-rigged to a size 10 hook and a 10lb Korda Kruiser Control hooklink. Minutes later, the specimen mirror took the hookbait and shortly afterwards he was holding his new personal best up for the cameras.

“Surface fishing is by far my favourite method and I would never leave for a session without my floater gear,” the mechanic told Angling Times. “Sometimes you’ll only get a small window of opportunity when the fish will be really having it and you need to make sure you’re ready or you can miss your chance.

“I really can’t get my head around the fact that some anglers will see fish feeding on the top and carry on fishing on the bottom without giving it a go because the results can be instant and it’s a method that’s easy to master.

“If there is one tip I’d give anyone that’s fishing on the surface it is to whip your bait onto the shank  with the finest braid possible and tie your mainline to the eye of the hook because this gives a really natural presentation and has resulted in so many more fish on the bank for me.”

Angler lands two carp for over 100lb

Brian Humphries achieved a feat which very few anglers can lay claim to – catching two carp for a combined weight of over 100lb – with fish of 59lb 14oz and 40lb 8oz.

The two specimens were taken by the Cheltenham-based rod from a Berkshire stillwater after he made the decision to get away from the crowds and fish an unpopular peg in a quiet area of the lake.

He located a clear channel in the weed at 100yds range and baited the spot with Hinders Snailz boilies, Salt and Pepper hemp and chopped tiger nuts before casting a pop-up hookbait over the top.

“It was the opening week of the season on the venue so it was very busy and all of the so called ‘hot’ swims were already taken,” Brian told Angling Times. “I took a bit of a gamble and decided to fish one of the unfancied pegs but thankfully it proved to be an excellent choice.”

Narcoleptic angler hires minders to stop him falling in

An angler who suffers from an illness that can cause him to fall into a deep sleep at any moment has hired a team of minders to prevent him from dropping off during big matches!

Nottinghamshire’s Phil Hunt has suffered with narcolepsy for almost a decade, and the disability has caused the keen matchman no-end of problems, with his rivals being forced to save his life on numerous occasions after he’s fallen into the water after nodding off on his seatbox.

He has also been unable to fish conventional long pole tactics, and has smashed countless sections after dropping them as he doses off. Problems have also arisen at the draw bag and weigh-in.

Phil told Angling Times: “Narcolepsy is a complex illness. Technically, you can be asleep with your eyes open while having a conversation, yet moments later you’ve forgotten all about it.”

“I always write my peg number on my hand at the draw, just in case I’m actually asleep. Once during a big match at White Acres I tipped all my fish back before the weigh-in, it was a lot of fish too. All the anglers around me looked on in disbelief – I can only assume I was actually ‘asleep’ when I emptied my net!”

Despite the multitude of problems, Phil is determined to stay competitive in the sport he has loved for over 50 years, and to that end the Crown Inn AC member has now acquired the services of an assistant to keep him awake during competitions.

“I’ve won hundreds of trophies at club level and been involved in Fish O’Mania qualifiers - the desire to win is still burning brightly, but I need help to keep going at that level,” added Phil.

“The floating pole is my number one tactic these days as the bites are so vicious that they wake me up if I’ve dozed off, but a lot of venues don’t allow the approach. I just wish they understood I need to use it because of my disability.”

One of the men who helps keep an eye on Phil is Paul Slater, and he admits the task helps keep him and his fellow club members on their toes.

“He does struggle to stay awake but everyone thinks it’s great he still gets out fishing and we are more than happy to give him assistance if and when it’s needed,” said Paul.

Margin caught 40lb common

Robert Kinge proved you don’t need to fish at range to catch big carp when he landed this personal best 40lb common carp from the margins of Kevin Nash’s Church Pool in Essex.

The 24-year-old manager of Hampshire Tackle found a small clear area close in which he baited with a light scattering of whole and chopped boilies and hemp.

Over the top of this he offered a snowman presentation consisting of a 15mm Nash Monster Squid bottom bait tipped with a 10mm black pop-up.

“All the fish I’d seen show had been in front of the anglers on the opposite side of the lake,” he told Angling Times. “Then out of the blue I received a take and after a slow, plodding fight I netted a huge common which smashed my old pb of 33lb.”

Rob also landed a 26lb 10oz common using a size 7 Nash Fang X barbless hook tied KD style to an ESP Camo Sink hooklink and a 2oz inline drop-off lead.

40 year wait for pb roach comes to an end

A 40-year campaign to break his roach personal best ended with Peter Kelly slipping the net under this 3lb roach from the River Frome.

The Wimbourne-rod had made the journey to Purbeck Angling to pick up his Wareham DAS season ticket and after making his purchase decided to wet a line on the club stretch for half an hour.
Within minutes of making his first cast, a small trout had fallen for his legered breadflake hookbait, but shortly afterwards he received another fast take that resulted in the memorable catch.

“I had barely any time to fish but I had a rod, a few slices of bread and a landing net and couldn’t resist a couple of casts.”

“I’ve spent countless sessions over four decades trying to beat my previous best of 1lb 15oz and it finally happens when I’m least expecting it,” explained Peter, who was using a 3lb hooklink and a size 12 hook.

Huge brace of ling banked

Two huge ling and more than three dozen big conger eels were landed during a sensational charter fishing trip out of Newhaven in Sussex last week.

Steve Garner from Fareham boated the biggest ling of the session, weighing 26lb 8oz (pictured) during the day afloat on Ocean Warrior 3, with a 21lb fish falling to fellow angler Gavin Eason of Lancing.

Both anglers presented mackerel flappers among the wreckage of a ship 200ft below the surface.

Anglers share 220lb of silvers at Bough Beech

The top three of the latest event at Bough Beech Reservoir shared over 220lb of fish between them …..and there wasn’t a carp to be seen!

Leading the way with 87lb 3oz was Andy Cummings who used the groundbait feeder with worms to take bream to 4lb at regular intervals.

Runner-up Rob Williams also attracted plenty of quality slabs and roach to record 80lb 2oz, while third spot was occupied by Sean Barnet who took 59lb 8oz.

Trio of slabs weigh over 35lb

Ben Ward continued his assault on the bream stocks at a tough Hertfordshire stillwater with the capture of a trio of big fish weighing more than 35lb in total.

Targeting the venue for a four-day session, the all-rounder from Leighton Buzzard took slabs weighing 15lb 4oz, 11lb 14oz and 9lb 15oz on critically-balanced corn hookbaits on lead clip set-ups over the top.

“It was a really enjoyable trip and I even got the chance to do a bit of coaching with a bloke who wanted to learn more about bream fishing,” said Ben.”
