Deep hotspot produces 36lb 8oz common
Targeting a firm spot in 37ft of water paid dividends for Mike Jarvis who caught this 36lb 8oz common from the Bundy’s Pit syndicate in Cambridgeshire.
The Peterborough-based rod had received a number of liners and seen several fish show over his baited area before he had the bite just after first light.
He said: “The weather was really cold with temperatures dropping down to minus four and there was a north westerly wind blowing for the whole of my 48 hour session. This is my third year as a winter ticket member of the syndicate and is the first fish I have banked.”
Mike used a 10mm Mainline Baits Milky Toffee pop-up over a handful of freebies on a hinged-stiff rig tied with 25lb Fox Rigidity and size 5 Arma Point SR hooks.
Big perch dominate Wye catch
The River Wye perch shoals have made a revival this winter and Gary Baldwin took advantage by putting together a 25lb plus net of them during his latest outing on the venue.
After seeking advice from friends, the Hereford-based rod visited a local stretch armed with a sack of worms and within moments of chucking out a small feeder packed with freebies the tip wrapped round and a 2lb specimen was soon in the net.
Things got even better later in the day when he smashed his personal best with a 2lb 10oz fish fell for his lobworm offering.
River Ancholme produces mega roach weights
Rivers such as the Thames and Wye are renowned for their winter form but the small Ancholme proved it is amongst the best waterways during cold conditions as the top four shared almost 70lb of roach.
With very little colour in the water, most of the field went down the breadpunch route and Chris Reilly utilised the tactic best to put 24lb 10oz on the scales.
The Grimsby Pelham rod fished the bait at 8m and caught roach to 6oz throughout the day. Second spot was secured by Phil Hurst who hauled out 16lb 8oz.
