Irish call for all to fish its big matches

Ireland is set to host more ‘open-to-all’ competitions than ever before as anglers describe the quality of fishing as being ‘back to its best’.

It’s been announced that there are already over 40 major events planned for next year, which will not only attract some of the biggest names in angling, but will also be open to travelling UK pleasure anglers looking to fill their nets at a host of iconic fisheries.

Famous waterways such as the Rivers Shannon and Erne along with stillwaters like the prolific Loch Muckno - that hosts the prestigious World Pairs Angling Championships - will ensure top quality sport for those targeting the ever-growing shoals of bream, roach and hybrids.

The timing of the announcement couldn’t have been better as not only is the emerald isle going to be staging more competitions since the ‘glory years’ of the seventies, but anglers like former World Champion Tommy Pickering say that the fishing in Ireland is now better than ever.

“Up until a couple of years ago I hadn’t been over to Ireland for two decades, but I’ve fallen in love with the place all over again,” Tommy told Angling Times.

“I competed in the World Pairs Angling Championship this year and my partner and I averaged 30lb-per-man on five different venues. Even that was only good enough for 22nd place, which just shows how good the fishing is.

“I’ve booked up for 7 weeks fishing next year. I think it’s great news that all of these competitions have been organised and that anyone can go over to not only compete in some of the best events on the match calendar, but also sample some of the best coarse fishing in the world.”

The competitions are being organised by Inland Fisheries Ireland, which is confident that the new host of open competitions will reinvigorate the interest of anglers who have previously experienced the Irish match scene as well as creating a whole new generation of travelling fishermen.

“There’s no doubt that the coarse fishing here has been up and down for one reason or another, but now it’s better than ever,” said Paul Bourke angling information officer for Inland Fisheries Ireland.

“The buzz about next year’s calendar is amazing and is something that UK anglers shouldn’t miss out on.”

RiverFest expands

Keen to strike while the iron is hot, Angling Trust RiverFest creator Dave Harrell is already planning the 2014 event and is appealing for interested parties to come forward and put their local waterways into the melting pot for next summer’s qualifiers.

Basking in the glow of what was unanimously voted a hit, Dave has exclusively revealed to Angling Times that a number of new rivers will host eliminators in 2014 including the River Don, Warwickshire Avon and River Weaver as well as the likes of the Thames that hosted matches this year being lined up for another heat elsewhere on its length.

However, nothing has been finalised and Dave is all ears to any venue as he strives to achieve the right demographic to allow as many anglers around the UK as possible to take part.

“The event surpassed even my expectations so I want to get next year’s competition underway and that means appealing to match organisers and clubs that control rivers to put their waters forward,” Dave explained. “While I was happy with most of the venues used in 2013 there are some I’d like to replace simply to provide anglers with better fishing and to spread the matches around a bit more. I’ve already had enquiries but with so many rivers to consider I think we can make next year’s River Fest brilliant.”

Dave is also hoping to secure more sponsorship for the final, upping the prize for the winner from an already substantial £10,000 and putting the match on a par with Fish O’Mania and Maver Match This in terms of money on offer.

“I’m sure we can secure more sponsorship as RiverFest goes from strength to strength but from talking to a lot of the finalists last weekend, they were more than happy to see river fishing get the same big match treatment that commercial carp waters get. The cash was secondary really.”

England net bronze in World Feeder Champs in South Africa

The Preston Innovations England Feeder team’s African quest to be crowned world champions fell just short on the sprawling Bloemhof Dam as Tommy Pickering’s men had to settle for the bronze medal after trying with Hungary on points and missing out on second place by aggregate weight.

“Frustrated and disappointed” were two of the words used by Tommy as he reflected on a job that was so near yet so far, host nation South Africa cruising to the gold on both team and individual fronts as their vast knowledge of the dam came into play to trounce all-comers.

At the halfway point however, it was looking good for England as they were just a point behind South Africa and looking good to mount a serious challenge as the side got to grips with the long range feeder work needed and the carp that unlike UK fish had very soft mouths meaning lost fish, not to mention lots of snags from lost tackle over the practice week.

Angling Times columnist Steve Ringer was England’s leading man, recording a section second and fifth to end up in the top ten but well away from a medal, although drawing two pegs that in his own words were absolute ‘snag pits’ didn’t help the cause, the appearance of small carp on day two also throwing England a curve ball and stealing a few valuable points from their final tally.

World Feeder Angling Championships
Bloemhof Dam, South Africa (16 teams)

Mixed emotions were no doubt coursing through the minds of the Preston Innovations Englanf Feeder team after they signed off their marathon trek to South Africa for the feeder world championships with a team bronze medal - but it could all have been so much more.

Scoring 48 points, England were eight off the pace set by host nation South Africa but tied with Hungary only to see aggregate weight deny them a silver, not that the team would deep down have been happy with that as they headed south of the equator with gold medals firmly on the menu.

However, South Africa and their wealth of experience and knowledge of the massive Bloemhof Dam proved just too strong for the other 15 competing teams, England included and they proved their mastery of the event by winning the individual gold too to send England back home with plenty of questions to answer as to why a great position after day one slipped away.

“We had a chance to win but weren’t able to take it,” admitted boss Tommy Pickering. “We were excellent on Saturday and then fell apart on day two but that’s life and I’ve seen it happen in match fishing plenty of times. It doesn’t soften the blow and we’ve had two fantastic weeks fishing an awesome venue with brilliant fishing and when you reflect on it, you think ‘well we could have been fourth and have no medal’. I know I always say we go to win gold and we do and of course, we should think that way but I think when we get home we’ll be pleased with a medal.”

Practice has seen England catch plenty of carp, aided by a local angler and friend of
Tommy’s who sorted the side out with local groundbaits and flavourings, these additives proving key to catching the wild carp of Bloemhof and Tommy acknowledges that without them, England’s challenge may well have been scuppered before it go going.

Sticking to the same team for both days of Tommy, Mick Vials, Adam Wakelin and Phil and Steve Ringer, with Grant Albutt the man to sit out the weekend’s action, England soon learnt that fishing one main line at around 40m or 50m depending on the depth and then casting around that immediate area was the key to catching.

“We used big cage and open end feeders with 50cm hooklengths and fed the local groundbait mix that looks like ground popcorn,” Tommy explained. “Those flavours were added to this – one was a strong banana flavour and the other a secret blend. God only knows what was in that but they seemed to work over a plain mix. To the crumb we added corn and lots of hemp fishing a single piece of corn on size 12 or 14 hooks.”

“The carp in the dam were wild and had never been caught before to we used pretty crude tackle with 0.19mm to 0.125mm hooklengths and big hooks but it didn’t seem to matter,” he added. “Being patient was also vital and in practice we set a target for the opening day of 10 carp but we actually needed nearer 20! What did upset the cart a little was the appearance of small carp on day two and some teams seemed to have these sussed and knew how to catch them whereas we didn’t.”

“We came to South Africa confident because the style of fishing and the target fish aren’t alien to us but we always knew we had to beat South Africa to win. They even had maps of the lake showing the depths and where the snags were plus flavourings and additives galore. It’s always difficult to beat the home team but I’m proud of the performance yet brassed off to have missed out after being so well-placed after day one. We can soul search for months to come about what went wrong but I don’t think any of us will be able to say for definite – you just put it down to experience.”

Match ace Andrew Murphy wins £10,000 Riverfest

Few events are voted a resounding success in their first year when it comes to matchfishing, but no one had any complaints about the inaugural RiverFest contest.

The event got the thumbs up from all competing in this big money final – none more so than from Welsh angler Andrew Murphy. He held his nerve to take the £10,000 top prize in a match that saw the result in doubt right up to the final hooter.

Big barbel and chub were expected to throw a spanner in the works on the sections of river above Hereford, but they didn’t really figure. That left silverfish to pave the way for Andrew, known on the match scene as ‘Spud’, as he tallied up 44-9-0 to get ahead of a dramatic three-way tie for second.

That saw Paul Bick, Michael Dalziel and Chris Parr all finish with 41-1-0. After checking and rechecking the weights, they couldn’t be separated and so had the money for the next three places shared out. John Urruty on 40-14-0 took fifth and £1,000, with Scott Geens earning himself £700 for sixth with 39-6-0.

The weekend was all about Spud though, the Welsh international digging deep into his vast reservoir of experience on the Wye. The Ebbw Vale man has won the Wye Champs and the big charity match held on the river annually, and he needed that nous on a river that proved a very different mistress on Day 2.

“On the first day I drew peg 24 at Belmont, a decent chub peg and took nine fish on the maggot feeder casting right across to the tree line with triple maggot on the hook,” Spud revealed. “This was the big fish end of my draw so I was delighted with 26-8-0 and joint third overall as a lot of pegs can be hard in that area. It can ruin your chances before they’ve got going and I guess it was a bit of a gamble playing the sit and wait game and seeing if they’d feed or not because the chub hadn’t gone mad in the run-up to the match.”

But a good weight on Day 1 would count for nothing if the draw bag dealt poorly on Day 2 in the town centre where roach and dace would dominate. Spud couldn’t have drawn any better with the same peg that Paul Bick had won the match off the day before, next to the town bridge. With the peg below empty as one angler had to go home the day before, Spud may even have allowed himself a few seconds to think his name was on the trophy. But he would have been wrong.

“I was expecting 30lb without much trouble and fancied it big time and so attacked the swim with lots of feed on the stick float a few rods out just as Paul had done the day before,” he said. “The first hour was good and I was on target but the wheels came off from then on and I was really scratching about for a few fish. I had a few words with myself and set a revised target of 15lb to 20lb to do well. I also cut the feeding back.”

Slowly Spud began to put a few fish together using a 8x4 stick float and double bronze maggot but with rumours flying around of Richie Reynolds having 30lb of chub on the end peg at Belmont and four big barbel on the Ferry Meadow section, Spud couldn’t be sure where he stood and needed a good final hour or so – and thankfully he got it.

Event creator Dave Harrell was delighted with the event. “It couldn’t have gone any better and what a terrific tribute to river fishing the weekend has been,” said Dave. “The river was just perfect and we couldn’t call the winner right up until the end. To have such close weights in the final reckoning is unreal and I’m sure those boys will be cursing a lost fish or a decision to spend too long on the feeder!”

“Credit to Spud though. He’s been one of the best anglers on the Wye, won all there is to win and can add RiverFest to that. We’ll be back next year with more qualifiers, new venues and with luck, more money for the final. Watch this event go!” Dave added.

Result: 1 A Murphy, Tredegar Angling, 44-9-0; jt2 P Bick, Shakespeare, M Dalziel, RAF and C Parr, Sensas Thyers, all 41-1-0; 5 J Urruty, Alfreton Angling, 40-14-0; 6 S Geens, Preston Innovations, 39-6-0.

Big boost for Fish O'Mania with more cash and more pegs

Fish O'Mania is set to receive a major overhaul after tournament bosses revealed plans to boost the prize pot and increase the amount of places available in the qualifiers.

Each year thousands of anglers clamber for a spot in one of the 16 heats of the big money match fishing competition and officials have now decided to remove the ‘winner takes all’ element by signing a deal that will see the second and third placed anglers in the final receive a financial reward.

The winner will still walk away with a cheque for £30,000, with the pay-out for those who just missed out on the top spot still under negotiation.

From next year anglers will have a greater chance than ever to compete in the qualifiers, with places increased to almost 2,500. Five of the rounds will host 150 anglers, two will accommodate 180 fishermen and Lindholme Lakes will host a 300-peg match.

There have also been changes in the venues being used, with Yorkshire’s Hayfield Lakes and Nottinghamshire’s Hallcroft Fishery replacing Aston Park and Messingham Sands.

Matchroom Sport Media Director Luke Riches believes the changes will make the 21st anniversary pf the event even more spectacular and he told Angling Times: “This competition is hugely oversubscribed and this is our way of accommodating even more anglers.

“We have decided to create a prize for those that come second and third to keep the match alive if someone dominates from the start like last year’s winner Jamie Hughes did.

“It will make it a nail-biting affair right until the last minute and I’m confident this will be the best Fish O’Mania ever,” he added.

Former winner Warren Martin is hoping to regain his crown next year and is looking forward to taking part in the refreshed event. “I think the idea of adding extra pegs is excellent as it gives more people a chance,” he said. “It might make the fishing a bit harder but if you are turning up purely for a good day’s sport then Fish O’Mania isn’t for you anyway.

“Creating prizes for second and third will definitely add to the excitement and I think this is the right way forward.”

**Online entry will open to Angling Trust members on January 14 and close on February 4, with each ticket priced at £25.**

**Fish O’Mania Facts**
- Last year 5,254 separate bids were made for the qualifiers with less than half of those successful, with 2,250 spaces on offer.
- Garbolino’s Neil Machin took the biggest Fish O’Mania final weight ever when he hauled out 217lb 8oz from Hayfield Lakes in 1996. Angling journalist Jon Arthur took the biggest net in a qualifier with 252lb 11oz from Viaduct Fishery in 2011.
- The final has been held at four different venues. Leicestershire’s Mallory Park hosted the inaugural contest in 1994 before it switched to Hallcroft Fishery in Nottinghamshire for 1995 and 1996. Yorkshire’s Hayfield Lakes staged it between 1997 and 2007 before it was handed to Cudmore Fishery in 2008.
- Only one man has bagged the title twice, with Matt Hall securing his name in the record books with victories in 2003 and 2009.
- Did you know that qualifiers weren’t always held solely on commercial fisheries? Up until 2005, natural waters were used, with the likes of River Soar and Weaver hosting heats.

Match weights soar in mild autumn

Unseasonal warm temperatures saw some huge weights of match carp to 373lb taken last weekend.

Despite the onset of November, temperatures reached almost 20°c and anglers were still catching fish close in, in the margins and up-in-the-water. Many commercial fisheries remain heavily coloured and no severe frosts have put the carp off feeding properly yet.

Top of the pile were the results from Alders Farm near Milton Keynes where the start of its not so aptly named winter league produced a staggering seven weights over the 200lb-mark. Leading the pack was Ricky Quick who took a staggering 373lb 15oz fishing close in with pellets to land carp to double figures from the complex’s Ash Pool.

Robbie Williams put 230lb 12oz on the scales at Frant Lakes in Kent, where luncheon meat did the damage, and Sussex’s Framfield Fishery saw weights to 216lb 8oz. At Gold Valley, one of the UK’s oldest and most famous commercial carp waters, Anthony Flint topped the pile with a weight of 204lb 12oz, taken on both the feeder and the pellet waggler shallow. And although weights weren’t quite as high in the Midlands and the North, it still needed 184lb to win at Decoy Lakes near Peterborough and 170lb at Hayfield Lakes in Doncaster.

Leading Fisheries Management Consultant Dr Bruno Broughton said that the metabolism of cold-blooded fish is closely linked to water temperatures.
“This autumn has been characterised by a long, warm 'tail', with mild conditions and an absence of overnight frosts that would otherwise bring water temperatures down, hence the prolonged sport,” he explained. “Although there are differences between fish species, each has a cut-off lower temperature below which little food is consumed and growth virtually ceases. In carp, this tends to occur when water temperatures fall below about 7-8oC - which we haven't experienced so far. I’d urge anglers to keep taking advantage of this and fill their boots before we need thermals!”

So how for how long can we expect these mild temperatures to hold? According to the Met Office at the time of going to press, daytime temperatures  are set to remain above average for at least the next week, and ‘near or perhaps above average’ up to Thursday 28 November.

Academy to keep England on top of the world

Match angling legend Dick Clegg has revealed plans to create an academy that will keep England at the top of the international ladder for decades to come.

Countless team and individual gold medals have been brought home from the world championships in recent years and arrangements are now being put together to nurture stars of the future to help them replicate that success.

The former England team manager believes there is a vast array of talent that has the potential to compete at the highest level but is adamant a new system needs to be installed. “Each year we run trials to help pick our junior and ladies teams and those that don’t get picked often disappear into the wilderness, which isn’t a good thing,” he told Angling Times.

“We need to give those people that weren’t so lucky first time round the chance to improve and be in with a better shot next time. This can only be done by inviting them to regular tuition sessions run by coaches of a very high level three standard.
“I’m determined to get this scheme off the ground so that the pool of talent gets even bigger, giving the management of each team a very difficult decision when it comes to selecting squads for competition,” he added.

Milo star Steve Gardener has worked under the stewardship of Dick on numerous occasions during international events and believes he is the perfect figure to head the forward-thinking approach. He said: “He has been there and seen it all so I can’t think of a better man to get something like this up and running. A lot of anglers only fish commercials these days so a scheme like this could challenge them to learn more specialised skills such as the bolognese or slider that are key to winning on the international stage.”

Just 5oz secures £25,000 payday for Andy Leathers in Parkdean Masters

Parkdeans Masters 2013
White Acres Holiday Park, Jenny’s Pool (24 pegs)

Browning Hot Rod Andy Leathers is the 2013 Parkdean Masters Champion - and £25,000 richer - after winning one of the closest finals in the event’s 14-year history, on the Jenny’s Lake at Cornwall's White Acres complex.

Andy hit the front of the highly-competitive, star-studded field, four-hour event with five carp in the first hour from peg 16 and continued to catch steadily throughout, including fish to double figures, fishing long pole and worm in his 20 carp haul and it was a lead he was to maintain right up to the all-out but it was a close run thing after a late challenge from Angling Times’ Ben Fisk on peg 8 who found Jenny’s F1 hybrids feeding shallow on pellet fished on the long pole.

Middy-backed Ben was the first of the two to weigh in, and after posting a brilliant 97-15-0, there were rumblings that he might just have pipped St Neots-based Andy for the crown. A big crowd had gathered with the news of Ben’s weight and after the first net total was announced, the nerves were jangling. The second weigh confirmed that Andy had won the match but only just me a mere narrow 5oz margin with 98-4-0 – the closest in the event’s history. However, it could have been a very different story had Andy not switched rigs half way through the match.

“The heavy ripple caused by the strong wind started to swamp my rig, so I jumped off my box, grabbed another top kit and set up a bigger rig with a more visible bristle,” Andy explained.

The change ensured he was able to present a big worm on the deck at 14m over chopped worm and caste feed, which he potted in after every two or three fish and Andy took all of his fish on this approach despite the odd look shallow with no joy.
Remarkably, Andy, a finalist in this year’s Fish O’Mania, only just secured his place in the final by the narrowest of margins, clinching the last qualifying place from the Preston Innovations Festival by a single point and a better aggregate weight over a number of anglers on the same 31 point total!

“I am absolutely over the moon. To win something like this is a feat I thought I would only ever dream of achieving,” Andy reflected. “It still hasn’t quite sunk in to be honest. I was the last to draw, and peg 16 - the favourite peg on Jenny’s - was left in the bag for me. I guess it was just my day!”

“I caught fishing a whole worm on the deck over regular feed of chopped worm and caster and managed to keep fish coming steadily throughout of the day but halfway through the match, I was told that I was in front, so I tried to keep the fish coming and keep the pressure on,” he continued. “I actually didn’t realise that Ben had caught as well as he had, so I was very relieved when I found out I had done enough I’d also like to say a big thank you to the sponsors, Parkdean, who make the event possible.”

Runner up Ben had an agonising wait to see if he had stolen the crown after an impressive display of shallow fishing on the long pole saw him make up for a slow first hour, which probably cost him first place. His shallow pellets tactics and high catch rate attracted a large crowd, who watched as at one point Ben bagged 19 F1s in just 30 minutes.

The weather played a big part in the match, as a stiff breeze pushed the bigger fish up the lake to the high-numbered pegs, where a number of big carp turned up early doors for Ed Warren, Lee Kerry and Matt Godfrey. The action was short lived, however, and the wind dropped and the bites slowed and it was worse for the anglers in the low-numbered pegs, as there was little action from big fish until the last hour when, by then, it had become a two-horse race. That last hour did see a big push from England young gun Matt, but time ran out and he had to be content with 77-5-0 for a third place.

Parkdean’s Regional Director, Stephen Griffiths, who presented the winner’s cheque and new Master's trophy, congratulated the winner: “A big congratulations to Andy. It has been one of the most exciting matches in the events 14-year history, and the closest finish to date. It really was a riveting match to watch.”

Cash boost for Riverfest

One of the biggest events on the match fishing calendar has been given a major lift after a pair of water companies agreed to boost the prize pot by £4,000.

Bosses from the Angling Trust had been locked in talks with officials at Thames Water and Severn Trent Water and an agreement has now been reached to help increase the overall pay-out for the final of the inaugural RiverFest to at least £24,000.

Both companies have received numerous fines in recent years for pollution incidents but have now signalled their intent on working closely with the angling community and have got the ball rolling by agreeing to the forward-thinking sponsorship deal.

The big final will see 60 anglers battle it out on the River Wye on November 16 and 17 for the top prize of £10,000, and chief organiser Dave Harrell is delighted with the latest development. “Considering this is the first year, the response from anglers has been brilliant and proves that anglers want a big money natural fishing competition,” he explained.

“The additional funding is extremely welcome and not only bridges the shortfall on a few of the qualifiers that haven't sold out, but it also means the prize money is guaranteed and could even go as high as £26,000 if the remaining heats are booked up.”

Thames Water Angling Development Manager Will Barnard was involved in the negotiations and said: “We value our involvement with the angling community and are pleased to support RiverFest which has one of its qualifiers on the River Thames.
“It’s very important to us that this waterway - which provides the majority of the water we supply to our customers and receives treated effluent from many of our sewage treatment works - is also a productive venue for this exciting new competition.”

Ireland 'best for 30 years'

Could fishing in Ireland be back to its former glory?

That’s the suggestion from several key figures this week after a bumper 2013 for fishing in the Emerald Isle, which has seen it billed as ‘the best for 30 years’. Roach, roach-bream hybrids and perch have been feeding in huge numbers and more visiting anglers are now returning to its shores.

In recent weeks there have been some incredible individual catches. A practice match for the King of Clubs event saw UK fishery owner Kev Johnson bag 450 perch for 80lb at Gulladoo Lake on a 4m whip to hand. Meanwhile, the biggest one-day weight in the World Pairs Angling Championship was 88lb of hybrids to overall competition winner Cathal Hughes from Upper Lough Erne. In fact this five day competition saw an average catch of 26lb per man per match over the 124 angler field. And there were several 70lb-80lb catches of entirely roach from Lough Muckno during its own pairs event last week.

So why is Ireland fishing so well in competitions in 2013? More big competitions organised and more development work to fisheries is partly responsible, according to Dick Caplice, a former Irish National team manager and now chairman of the Irish Angling Development Alliance. At Lough Muckno in Castleblaney, a lakeside road and parking spots have allowed access to 220 pegs which have fished brilliantly for roach this year.

“The fishing here is currently the best I’ve seen for 30 years,” said Dick. “Government and the tourist board are now promoting angling again after the economic downturn. They’re spending money wisely in developments, protecting the sport for the future and there’s more interaction between politics and the angler on the ground in general. We’ve got access to more venues and pegs and we’re now getting prominent UK anglers turning up on our shores for the first time. I think there has been a shift from continental angling in Holland and Sweden back to Ireland and there has most certainly been a move from commercial fisheries back to Irish angling,” he said.

Francis McGoldrick is a popular angling guide and owner of the renowned Angler’s Rest guesthouse in Ballyconnell, Co. Cavan, and he said the fishing is currently the best he has seen in his lifetime.

“I wouldn’t say the anglers are flooding back just yet, but there has been a marked improvement this year compared to the last five or six. Visiting anglers are now realising that they can’t catch bream like they used to because the venues are so clear now. The bream are still there but you need to fish at dawn or dusk to catch them. The best day time fishing now is for the hybrids which are dominating everywhere. They feed all the time, a bit like F1s in England, and they fight very well for their size,” he said.

So what do visiting English anglers think? Former World Champion Tommy Pickering stopped going to Ireland in the early 1990s, because in his words he got ‘carried away’ with commercial fisheries which were taking over at that time. But he finally returned last year to fish the prestigious Classic event he once won and, after another four visits in 2013, he admits he has fallen in love with the place again.
“I started going again originally for the benefit of my position in the world feeder team, because it’s a special kind of feeder fishing over there with braid. But I’d just forgotten how beautiful Ireland is and how magical the people there are. The fishing is never going to be as good as it was in the 70s and 80s with those 100lb catches of roach and when I went last May sport wasn’t great because the fish were migrating. But the fishing in September has been fantastic. In the World Pairs my partner and I averaged 35lb of silver fish a day and we still came 23rd! I’ve had a bite every single cast for a week. The two most important things I’ve suggested to the organisers have been to get car parks near the pegs and to spread the pegs apart by 20m each. They are listening to this now and I think the anglers will soon be back for sure,” he said.

England on top of the world

Drennan England have regained their title as the best fishing team on the planet after a dominant performance at the World Champs.

The side of Alan Scotthorne, Des Shipp, William Raison, Sean Ashby, and Steve Hemingray, plus support from stalwart Steve Gardener scooped their 13th team gold medal in what turned out to be a roach-fest on Poland’s Zeranski Channel.

There were celebrations on the individual front too as Leicester’s Steve Hemingray – making his debut at the event – and five times champ Alan Scotthorne both posted perfect scores over the two days with two section wins apiece.

However, the England duo were denied gold by France’s Didier Delannoy who landed two big bream late on day two to win a weight countback and push Hemingray into second overall and Scotthorne into the bronze medal position.

The team kicked off the event in emphatic fashion recording an incredible first day total of just 7 points – one of the biggest single day victories in World Champs history.

That came courtesy of FOUR section wins and a third place and put them streets ahead of their main rivals and home nation Poland.

The dominant score sent the other country’s into a major rethink for day two but England stood firm on the venue our lads likened to the Stainforth & Keadby Canal to post two more section wins in their 15 point, Day 2 tally. It was enough to retain the World Champs title England last won in 2010.

Shakespeare back on top of Division 1

The famous name of Shakespeare is once again at the top of the matchfishing tree after the West Midlands outfit won the Angling Trust Division One National on the Trent & Mersey Canal, proving their mastery of shallow canals where small fish are the target.

Champions a few years back on the Staffs/Worcester Canal, Shakespeare took this year’s silverware by a 13 point margin from eternal bridesmaids Maver Image who were second for the third time in five years with Daiwa Dorking finishing third a further 13 points in arrears on a day that saw big fish non-existent on the canal around Rugeley and Burton-upon-Trent, making it an out and out small fish contest.
And that suited Shakespeare just fine as their combination of chopped worm and squatt lines wrung out every fish possible from their pegs to see them post 442 points from their ten men, with Jason Cunningham having a share of individual second alongside Kamasan Starlets youngster Matt Derry.

The honours there went to Ultimate Barnsley Blacks man Simon Fields but by the narrowest of margins as he lifted the individual silverware by just 10g with a 4-010 net of small fish from C section, the early section proving the place to be as they produced eight of the top ten places with less than a kilo covering the top ten anglers.

New national a huge success

National championships held on commercial carp lakes are here to stay after the first ever event of its kind was branded a ‘huge success’.

The 2013 ‘Stillwater Championship’ was held at Lindholme, Hayfield and Hallcroft fisheries in the Doncaster area last month with 18 teams of 10 entering the prestigious event that was won by the legendary Ultimate Barnsley Blacks.

These commercial venues had been controversially chosen to host the 2013 Division Two National but, following complaints from traditionalists, who were opposed to moving the event from a ‘natural venue’, the match was moved to the Great River Ouse and the Stillwater Championships was created as a trial to gague the demand for a ‘commercial only’ event.

Due to the resounding success and popularity of the competition it will now be a permanent fixture on the match calendar running alongside more traditional ‘Nationals’ staged on the UK’s rivers and canals.

The Angling Trust, which organises the new event, has already booked Cudmore Fishery and Heronbrook Fishery in Staffordshire for next year and the organisations Chair of Competitions Mick Turner is of the opinion that the Stillwater Championships will only get bigger.

“You’ve only got to look at the entries for open matches to see there is a market for a ‘commercial national’,” Mick told Angling Times.

“I’m confident more teams will enter next year when they realise what is involved as the match produced 11 weights over 100lb and Barnsley received £3,500 for winning.

Steve Sanders, captain of Daiwa Dorking, the most successful team in the country, is all for a permanent team event on commercial fisheries and he added: “Any match, which puts plenty of anglers on the bank is worth fishing, whatever the venue.

“We didn’t put a team in this year because it was a four to five hour drive away, but we are seriously considering entering the next one because the 2013 event has been such a success.”

Match ace scoops £50,000 victory

Zac Brown is the 2013 Maver Mega Match This champion after a nail-biting day of action at Maver Larford Lakes, which saw the Preston Innovation Delcac man crowned the winner by a little over a kilo to pick up the massive £50,000 winner’s cheque.

Weighing in 52-460 from end peg 12 on the Match Lake of the Stourport fishery, Caterham, surrey-based Zac just got in front of 2011 winner Andy Power who was denied a memorable double after he scooped the UK Championships title just a few days earlier, one decent Larford fish dividing the two in a nervy weigh in that went right down to the wire, Andy eventually finishing with 51-520.

Fancied to do well off his draw on the island of the lake, Zac left it very late with a good run of margin fish from his right hand edge, using meat over groundbait to net carp to 9lb despite suffering lots of foul hooked fish and missed bites while Andy was left rueing a switch to the margins that gave him little to show for his efforts after catching so well shallow on the long pole line.

“I have to admit I had a bit of trouble sleeping the night before after I’d drawn the peg at the gala dinner,” Zac said. “So many people fancied it and obviously it was a great draw but brilliant pegs don’t fish themselves and there was always the chance that it wasn’t going to happen for me. With a few hours to go that was how it was looking but I guess I just about did enough in the end. I still can’t believe how close it was and that I’m actually the winner!”

Rule breach costs matchman a £1,500 payout

A top match angler lost out on a £1,500 prize after being disqualified for rule breaking.

Daiwa and Guru angler Andy Bennett was competing in the five day festival at Staffordshire’s Heronbrook Fisheries and accumulated a brace of section wins in the first two days.

His form continued into day three when he bagged 277lb from peg 7 on Match Lake but controversy struck when bosses accused him of cheating.

Before the tournament had begun owner Neil Dale told entrants that cutting back any vegetation was forbidden. “I made it clear this would not be tolerated and I caught Andy trimming reeds in his swim,” he said. “Every peg is fishable and anyone caught cheating will have their result from that match wiped off.”

Despite the incident, Andy fished the two final days and bagged zonal victories in each. The disqualification, however, meant he dropped down the leaderboard and missed out on overall glory.

“I was outside when it was announced that cutting swims was banned and although I admit I tried to do it, I never actually removed anything from my swim,” explained Andy, who was adamant he was treated harshly.

“All my fish were caught on the long pole and I didn’t catch a single fish in the margins. I’ve blatantly been robbed of the victory,” he added.
