First session on new water brings new lake record

Jack Perkins’ first session on a new water saw him bank a lake record carp in the shape of this mint-conditioned 36lb 4oz common.

The 19-year-old from Shropshire had spotted carp rolling in the margins of the Fenn Lake, which is situated on the popular Nar Valley Fisheries in Norfolk, and due to a covering of weed on the bottom he opted for a chod-rig presented over a scattering of Mainline Cell boilies.

Just four hours into the session, his alarm screamed off and he soon netted the fish that smashed his previous personal best by over 10lb and the old lake record of 32lb 4oz.

His 36-hour stint also produced carp of 16lb, 14lb, a trio of single-figure fish as well as an 18lb catfish, all of which were beaten with 15lb Korda Subline and size 8 Korda hooks.

“As soon I saw a fish show in the margins I cast a rig straight onto it, which produced a fish really quickly, but unfortunately that came off. I switched to a ‘choddy’ and that did the trick,” Jack told Angling Times.

“The next run produced the big one and when I saw it for the first time that’s when I got really nervous as I didn’t want to loose it like the one before.

“I’d been down a couple of times before for a look around and I’d seen fish showing in this area a couple of times, so it proves that you should always keep your eyes peeled and if you see a carp cast a rig at it.”
