Match stars in record bid

A group of the country’s most skilled big weight experts have set their sights on breaking the British match record this summer.

Buckinghamshire’s Alders Farm has produced countless huge weights in the past but, with the fish getting bigger by the week bosses are confident that it is capable of surpassing the current best of 682lb amassed by Gary Huth at Kent’s Hawkhurst Farm in 2009.

Fishery manager Trevor Price topped the all-time leader board at the complex last year with a 535lb net and he has now revealed plans to assemble a team of ‘bagging’ specialists on September 13 in an attempt to get their names in the history books.

Almost all of those set to take part have recorded 350lb-plus catches in the past and Trevor told Angling Times: “The venue is in the form of its life at the moment and last week Josh Blavins was just shy of 500lb in a match. That may be somewhere off the UK best but late summer is always the best time at the venue and I believe somebody could smash the record.

“I’ve had catches to just under 700lb in practice sessions and small knock-ups previously so it is possible.

“Over half of the pegs on Ash Lake are capable of producing such large catches and with a huge head of fish between 3lb and 10lb it is the perfect place to stage a record attempt,” he added.

Fundraising will also take part on the day, with a number of specimen carp anglers also taking part in a big carp match on Oak Lake to help raise money for The PACE Centre which specialises in transforming the lives of children and young people with physical disabilities.
