Dave Garner banked the fish of a lifetime when a carping trip produced one of the biggest rudd ever landed – a fish of exactly 4lb.
Just 10 minutes after casting out a 15mm boilie into a shallow, weed-choked lake in Lincolnshire the local angler hooked what he described as ‘the fish of my dreams’.
He’s targeted the venue’s rudd in the past and seen huge fish while walking around the venue, but nothing could have prepared him for when the lake-record fish slid over the rim of his net.
“I thought I’d hooked a small common carp as I saw the fish coming up through the shallow water.
“But then my jaw hit the floor when I realised it was the biggest rudd I’d ever seen,” Dave told Angling Times.
“My mate kept saying to me ‘why are you taking pictures of a rudd?’ as he just didn’t understand how significant this fish was to me.
“I landed a 42lb lake-record carp just a few hours later, but this doesn’t come close to what this rudd means to me.
“I’ve come down here a few times and specifically targeted them with float tackle, as it’s been a dream of mine to catch a really big one.”
The current British record for the species stands at 4lb 10oz, and the 27-year-old, from Market Rasen, Lincs, has since been back to the venue and banked another huge rudd weighing 3lb 14oz.
His four-pounder was fooled with a Denham Baits boilie hair-rigged to the back of a size 7 Nash hook.
“It would have been great to have caught the fish with traditional tactics, but these big stillwater rudd inevitably also feed on baits introduced by carp anglers,” Dave concluded.
