Incredible haul of specimen pike

Dave Horton has banked one of the biggest-ever hauls of specimen pike – five fish for more than 150lb.

The Essex angler’s fish weighed in at 36lb 4oz, 32lb 8oz, 29lb 8oz, 23lb 12oz and 29lb 4oz. All came from the ever-prolific Chew Valley Lake in Somerset when he legered smelt and mackerel deadbaits from the bank.

Dave’s big pike credentials speak for themselves. He’s landed over 30 thirties, more than 100 pike over 25lb, and is only one fish away from landing 300 fish of 20lb-plus.

Dave’s good friend, pike fishing legend and predator historian Neville Fickling reckons that this is the greatest-ever haul of big pike he’s ever heard of.

“This year I put my hand in my pocket and purchased the predator ticket. Although it cost me £900 this capture makes it worth every penny… what a session!” Dave told Angling Times.

“I wanted to get away from the crowds, so I opted to bank fish and it proved to be the right decision.

Chew Valley Lake continues to surpass even Bristol Water’s lofty expectations of the fishey. It’s now produced 25 pike over 30lb, with the biggest of 2018 going 41lb 2oz.
