‘FA Cup of angling’ will be UK's first 100k match
A GROUNDBREAKING new match offering a life-changing £100,000 to the winner – Britain’s biggest-ever fishing payout – is in the pipeline.
Named ‘The Fishing Association Super Cup’, the event is set to take place next year, and will be open to any angler prepared to pay the £50 entry fee.
It’s the brainchild of match angler and businessman Steve Dorks, who ‘wants to give something back’ to the fishing community.
“It’s been a dream of mine for a while now to create a big-money event,” he told Angling Times.
“Considering how much cash match anglers put into the fishing industry, there aren’t necessarily a lot of winnings up for grabs, bar what’s available in events such as Match This and Fish O’Mania, so next year I’ll be running the highest-paying match fishing event ever recorded in the UK.
“I want it to be fishing’s FA Cup, accessible to all anglers.”
Steve’s plan is to split the country into 10 regions, with seven qualifying rounds in each. A maximum of 256 anglers from each region can sign up to the qualifiers, with the top two anglers per region qualifying for the final.
“Beastie Lake on the Decoy Lakes complex will host the final, and is already booked for September 25, 2021,” Steve added.
“In addition to the £100k top prize, second place will get £8,000, and all the other finalists will walk away with at least £1,000.”
Steve is confident that the event can be a success, and is prepared to stump up cash if need be.
“Some people are saying that not all the tickets will sell,” he told us.
“But if that’s the case I’ll look to make up the rest of the bill myself. It’s not about the money for me, I just want to give something back to match fishing.
“I’d also like to see the final televised, and will be speaking with a broadcaster in the near future.”
