Shock bomb scare during fishery work party

THE discovery of an unexploded WW1 bomb brought a dramatic halt to a work party that was taking place at a popular angling club last week.

Members of Tydd Gote AC in Lincolnshire were working on a new car park next to their fishery when police told them to evacuate the area after a member of the public found the foot-long device by the main road bridge in the village.

“It was not what you expected to hear on a Sunday morning!” said club secretary John Bates.

“When we first saw the police turn up on the bridge, we expected them to tell us off for social distancing,” John added,

“but when the officer came down and told us a bomb had been found just up the bank, we were all very surprised.

“The bloke that found it had dragged it out of the drain whilst magnet fishing, so he must have got an even bigger scare!”

The Military’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team arrived at the site and moved the bomb to a nearby field where they performed controlled explosions to make it safe.

It’s not the first time that magnet fishermen have found unexploded bombs, with a similar device being landed from the Grand Union Canal recently.
