Flavoured maggots tempt big Stour chub

AN EARLY-morning raid on the Dorset Stour came to fruition for Richie Martin with the capture of a personal-best chub of 7lb 6oz.

Before introducing his float rig the Hampshire all-rounder baited a far-bank run with pouchfuls of plum-flavoured maggots.

He banked the fish after striking at a slight dip on his float an hour after his first cast.

Legal threat to club that broke lockdown

MATCH anglers who held a competition during the current lockdown period have been warned they will lose their fishing rights if they do it again.

HanKat Angling Society flouted the rules on organised sporting events by staging a nine-peg event on the Dudley Canal on November 7.

The club advertised a follow-upmatch, before the Canal & Rivers Trust (CRT) warned them that the matches breach Covid restrictions. The CRT told the club

“Should you go ahead and organise further events we will escalate the matter to our legal team to see what the Trust would need to do in order to ensure compliance with law, including the termination of your club’s angling agreement.

This is something we hope we can avoid, as it would not put angling in a good light at this time and undo the work the fisheries team have been doing behind the scenes in fighting the case for angling to be allowed to continue.”

Jamie Cook, the CEO of the Angling Trust, said:

“It is vital that anglers continue to fish safely, locally and responsibly throughout this pandemic. The last thing we need to see is irresponsible actions like this that brings angling into disrepute and endangers the hard-won concessions we have achieved for us to keep fishing through the lockdown.”

Biggest rainbow in a decade!

RAINBOW trout don’t get much more impressive than this monster 24lb 8oz fish caught from Dever Springs this past week.

The huge fish is the biggest caught from the Hampshire venue in over a decade and was landed by day-ticket angler Josh Sharp – obliterating his personal best!

A spokesperson for Dever told Angling Times: “This is our third 20lb-plus rainbow this winter and the biggest fish in the lake.

“The water here is crystal clear, so anglers who turn up and fish on a day ticket have the chance to stalk these huge fish.

“There’s still a 20lb-plus brown trout knocking around in the lake which a lot of anglers have got their sights on.”

Josh’s superb trout followed his dad’s pb brownie of 13lb earlier in the day.
