16 hour wait for a free swim pays off with a big crucian - Julian Barnes

“Following the capture of my first 4lb-plus crucian from Johnsons Lake in Surrey, I went back two weeks later.

“I waited 16 hours to get the swim I wanted, but there was a northerly wind blowing, so I didn’t think I’d get a take until morning.

“I woke up to a cold start with no wind and a clear sky. I’d already Spombed out a little bait the evening before but with no fish activity I opted to regularly cast my feeders to build up the swim.

“It was looking like a blank, so I planned one last cast before heading home. Just as I thought about reeling in I got my first bite from a 3lb 11oz crucian, quickly followed by another at 3lb 4oz and then this magnificent fish of 4lb 6dr.”

4lb-plus crucian lights up a misty morning

After a successful trip a few weeks ago, Julian Barnes returned to Surrey’s famous Johnsons Lake to target its monster crucians.

After a quiet first day with northerly winds and dropping temperatures, Julian saw three fish roll through the mist of first light the next morning.

“I Spombed out a little bait and left it to settle for 30 minutes before casting two rigs over the top,” he tells us.

“The first bite resulted in this magnificent 4lb 2oz crucian, which is a personal best, and it was quickly followed by three more fish to 3lb 8oz before bites dried up.”

Method feeder tactics with fake caster hookbaits and a special Method mix did the damage.

Morning crucian haul topped by 4lb-plus specimen

A MORNING spent targeting crucians ended in the best fashion for Matt Fernandez when he slipped his net under a 4lb 3oz pb.

It was the pick of the bunch for the Southampton specialist, who also landed six other crucians over 3lb during his visit to Johnsons Lake in Surrey.

He told us:

“The 4lb 3oz fish beat my previous best by 1oz and I drove home a very happy angler indeed!”
