Monster perch pair total 8lb 7oz

Lobworms have led to the capture of a huge pair of perch with a combined weight of 8lb 7oz.

The two fish of a lifetime fell to Matt Wood when he fished a lake in the Cotswolds.

The bigger perch scaled 4lb 6oz and the other weighed in at 4lb 1oz, and Matt attributes his success to a tactic known as ‘bait and wait’.

He primed his swim with red maggots to form an enticing bed of feed just over the marginal shelf of a private syndicate venue known as Carpathia.

“After baiting the swim I rested it for over an hour and popped to The Tackle Den, where I work part-time, to grab some bits,” Matt told Angling Times.

“It worked like a dream, as the bigger fish came on my first cast just 40 minutes after my bait hit the bottom and the next took the worm an hour later.”

The lakes in the Cotswolds are well known for containing huge perch and have produced many fish to well over 5lb in the past.

Both Matt’s fish fell to a simple leger rig that consisted of a running 1oz lead, a 1ft-long 6lb fluorocarbon hooklink and a size 6 Drennan Super Specialist hook.

“There are many ways to catch big perch these days, but you just can’t beat a lobworm hookbait. They will often get you a bite when everything else fails.

“The perch potential of some venues around here is second to none.”
