Elstow Pits under threat

THE FUTURE of one of the UK’s most influential carp waters has come under threat.

Elstow Pits in Bedfordshire have produced many of the country’s best anglers and were also the birthplace of numerous tackle items that we all take for granted such as dedicated spod and marker rods.

Korda’s hugely popular Stow bobbins are even based on the style of indicator first developed by an angler while fishing Elstow.

The waters could be lost to angling, however, following a planning permission application for a proposed landfill site and incineration facility which has been submitted by FCC Environment who currently have a recycling centre next to the lake.

Anglers have reacted angrily to the news with a Save Elstow Pits page set up on social networking site Facebook. And Angling Times is calling all anglers to help save the historic lakes.

Ian Stott caught one the lake’s most sought after residents, The Mother, at a weight of 49lb in January 2005 said: “It was always my dream to go back to the venue and have another go at some point in the future. Surely they can’t be allowed to deprive other people of their dreams.”

Another venue regular, Paul Rudd, told Angling Times: “It’s the birthplace of modern carp fishing and it would be a travesty if the application is approved. As well as the amazing fish which the lake’s hold they are also home to such a wide range of wildlife.”

To formally object to the planning application go to: www.publicaccess.bedford.gov.uk/online-applications and enter 12/01306/FULWME in the search box. All objections must be submitted by December 12.

Fishery fined £35K for having invasive species

The owners of a Devon fishery have been ordered to pay nearly £35,000 in fines and costs as part of an Environment Agency crackdown on invasive species.

Checks at Clawford Fishery revealed wels catfish and topmouth gudgeon in several of the 17 lakes on the popular holiday and day-ticket complex which the proprietors did not have a licence for, Barnstable magistrates were told. The owners pleaded guilty.

A £170,000 clean-up operation, funded by rod licence sales money, was launched to remove both species. During the procedure native fish stocks were rescued and held in quarantine while an organic piscicide – a chemical poisonous to fish - was applied to eradicate the invasive species.

Although licences for keeping wels catfish are regularly issued to fully enclosed stillwaters, they posed at risk at Clawford because the lakes flowed into the River Claw which is connected to the River Tamar.

The presence of both the catfish and topmouth gudgeon were seen as direct threat to the waterway’s valuable salmon stocks.

Although only 3 – 4 inches long, the topmouth gudgeon is one of the highest risk species in Europe and consequently is not permitted in any waters. Wels catfish are Europe’s largest freshwater fish and can be a voracious predator.

“Invasive non-native fish pose serious risks to our native species and habitats and are incredibly costly to the angling industry. The Environment Agency is working hard with fishery owners to prevent their spread and where high risk invasive fish are stocked illegally we will take appropriate action to ensure they are contained and removed,” said Matt Brazier of the EA.

The owner of Celtic Lakes Resort in Ceredigion has also been fined a total of £3,300 after being found guilty of keeping sturgeon without a licence.

An investigation was launched after Environment Agency Wales staff became suspicious following a magazine article which suggested that the species were in the lake.

Fishery manager, John Carney, claimed that he kept the fish as pets, but was found guilty by Aberystwyth magistrates.

One angler fished overnight and landed 2 carp to 16lb on halibut boilies. David Bialocerkiewicz caught a 19lb 04oz mirror carp using 10mm tutti fruiti boilies.

DAMSEL: There was a match on the 26th by the Wet Wagglers, the result was 1st Andy Corby 33lb 10oz (peg 2) 2nd Peter Jordan 30lb 0oz (peg 7) 3rd Mike Lynch 25lb 5oz (peg 20). Chris Corrigan caught a 15lb and 10lb common and a 4lb bream on sweetcorn. Mr and Mrs Penrose had a 14lb mirror and a 10lb common using luncheon meat as hook bait. BLUNHAM LAKE: Joseph Evans landed a 12lb common on Luncheon meat in the margins. His dad also caught a 8lb common and a 4lb bream using the same bait. Another angler round the lake landed 2 carp to 10lb also using luncheon meat in the margins. One angler landed 3 carp to 12lb from the margins float fishing with sweetcorn. Mick landed a few bream on the pole using sweetcorn. At the moment fishing in the margins with either luncheon meat or sweetcorn seems to be best tactics.

BOONEYS LAKE: Only a couple of people fished Booneys this weekend and unfortunately no carp were caught but there has been a lot of small roach being caught in the margins on maggots.

MATCH CANAL: David Dinnette put his angling knowledge to good effect catching 13 carp and 2 bream. The margins are fishing well for both carp and bream. The week’s tuition for beginners went really well with all the students catching, one of the students Ryan Culverhouse did well catching loads of fish and now has a personal best carp of 12lb 8oz. Bread is working well, particularly for the carp. Local matchman Peter Patmore had a really good day on the canal catching an estimated 100+ bag of carp and bream, the successful method was using paste on the top two of his pole.

Duo Catch 161 Carp - Prolific French Carping!

Paul Cooper & Jim Kelly enjoy a prolific session on Alder - 161 carp in the week!  Now that really is a runs water!

Watch the video here

This is what Paul had to say;

“This venue is excellent if you want to catch lots of really hard fighting mirror carp.  Despite the high pressure front and the high temperatures the fish still fed all day.  This really is the best runs water that i have ever visited.  As we got towards the end of the week the fish were getting bigger and were all falling into the upper twenties bracket.  I felt that due to the feeding frenzy of some of the smaller twenty pound fish the bigger fish did not get a look in.  They are there but we ran out of bait.”

Bumper Weeks Carp fishing at Glehias

The Draper Party fished Glehias w/c 30th June and had a bumper week of fishing, landing 39 carp for a total weight 896lb, including 7 new personal bests!

The full catch info is here;

10lb 15oz barbel tops six fish haul

Ron Cooper wasn’t put off when he arrived at a stretch of the Lower River Severn to be faced with a rapidly rising river and went on to land six barbel topped by this fish of 10lb 15oz.

Knowing that conditions would be difficult, the 64-year-old retired policeman decided to fish just one rod with a lump of luncheon meat on a simple running rig setup.

He said: “There was lots of debris and trees coming down and, sadly, a dead cow. I was struggling to keep control with all the extra water pushing through and I had to keep reeling in to clear my line.”

Ron’s winning presentation consisted of a size 4 Drennan Specialist hook attached to a 12lb mainline and a 5oz lead to hold bottom.

Commons Lake – Amazing Statistics!

We thought that after 9 weeks of clients at Commons Lake, we would publish an analysis of the catch reports that we have collected so far this year. Bearing in mind that the catch reports are collected from the anglers on the Friday (usually around mid-day) and as such don’t include Friday afternoon / evening / night catches nor anything else caught whilst packing down on Saturday mornings, these are the amazing statistics so far this season:

Over 9 weeks and a total of just 31 anglers, there have been 404 Carp and 14 Cats taken from Commons.

48.13

The 404 carp are made up by the following:

*  27 x 40′s to 49lb 4oz (Lake record – Ian Penny in April 2012)

*  149 x 30′s to 39lb 14oz

*  223 x 20′s to 29lb 14oz

only 5 x under 20′s

And that’s an astounding average size of 28lb 9oz over the 404 reported catches.

The Cats – 14 of them – range in size from 51lb to 82lb – an average of 67lb.

There were also a few Grass Carp, but such a small number that they aren’t really worth mentioning.

The total numbers so far this season come to (give or take a few ounces);

*  11,973lb of Carp

*  and 940lb of Cats.

46lb

All of these catches can be verified from the catch reports – a copy of these are available in the mobile home at Commons Lake for everyone to see.

So, if you are lucky enough to be booked on Commons Lake this year, what are the odds of you catching a 40+ or even a number of high 30′s?…. just check out these statistics.

New Fishery on Coole Lane, Nantwich now open!

Cheshire’s new carp and coarse fishery, Coole Acres Fishery, on Coole Lane, Nantwich, celebrated its first day of trading with a Grand Opening on Saturday June 16th. Despite the weather, the event drew local families, anglers and visitors to the newly established site and everybody enjoyed the hog roast, home-made cakes and cookies, Snugburys ice cream and drinks from the mobile bar provided by the Lord Combermere. The fishery team were on hand to provide further information about the business and some recent catches.

Several anglers braved the weather on the lake banks, enjoying their free angling for the opening day, resulting in around a dozen carp being caught throughout the event.

The fishery can be found on Coole Lane, off the A530 near Nantwich and is situated on a 20-acre site, surrounded by the beautiful Cheshire landscape. It boasts a number of lakes with the three-acre specimen Carp Lake well stocked with carp up to 27lb in weight, and three smaller one-acre fishing lakes as well as further facilities (toilets and an anglers lodge with a refreshment/lounge area, bait shop and showers currently under construction).

Brian and Bianca look forward to welcoming you to their fishery between 8am and 8pm open every day (Day tickets are £12 for the specimen lake, £8.50 for the coarse lakes). Please register at the barn after entering the site.

For more information on the fishery, please visit http://www.cooleacresfishery.co.uk/ or telephone 01270 446553.
