17lb 8oz monster tench is a shocker
A colossal tench of 17lb 8oz that smashes the UK record out of sight has been landed.
In one of the biggest shocks in specimen fishing, Angling Times can exclusively reveal the story of Neil Bradley and Jamie Potts who banked the specimen – which is 2lb 5oz bigger than the official British best –from an undisclosed UK stillwater with no tench form.
But the pair revealed that the historic catch won’t be making its way into the record books, as the shock specimen was netted live during a predator fishing trip.
“We were scouring the water on our boat, looking for pike, when another boat flew by at pace in the shallow water. Moments later we saw something break the surface,” explained Neil.
“Our initial reaction was that it was a big pike that had been startled, so we cast a lure in its direction, but we could see that the fish was still flailing on the surface so we drove the boat over to take a closer look.
“At first glance we thought it was a carp, but further investigation showed it was a huge tench. I’ve caught them to over 11lb and I instantly knew this one was much bigger.”
Once it was in the net, Neil and Jamie composed themselves and placed the fish on the scales before helping the fish recover, so that they could return it safely to the little-known venue.
“We couldn’t believe what we had netted. One minute I was chucking a lure around for pike, the next we had a tench that was a lot bigger than the record in the net – it was surreal.
“We rested it in the net for a while and when we released the fish it powered off and appeared to be in good condition. We stayed in the area for a few hours afterwards but it never resurfaced.
“Specimen angling has become a little predictable, but this fish shows there are record breakers out there that have never seen a hook,” added Jamie.
Dai Gribble wins Drennan Cup by just two points!
The world’s biggest specimen fishing competition has crowned Dai Gribble champion.
In the closest-ever finish in the 31-year history of the Drennan Cup the Staffs-based specialist became the envy of the big-fish world when votes cast by angling’s elite put him just two points ahead of Yorkshire’s Tony Smith.
He sent shockwaves through the angling world when he began his campaign and made an incredible string of tench hauls that many believe will never be rivalled.
The Korum-backed angler’s incredible journey began last May when he targeted Medway Valley Fisheries and banked a huge 13lb 3oz fish that was backed up by no fewer than seven other double-figure specimens.
Just a few weeks later he switched to another venue and made tench fishing history when he banked the biggest-ever specimen caught by design weighing in at a colossal 14lb12oz. The specimen later graced his net for a second time an ounce heavier at 14lb 13oz.
Not only did he land 16 double-figure tench during his campaign, but his summer was completed when he struck gold again, this time with another species – a 20lb 10oz bream, along with six other ‘doubles’ that secured his third and final Drennan Weekly Award of the season.
“By the end of June I’d made five catches that were all once-in-a-lifetime achievements in their own right, and anglers that I hold in the highest regard were saying ‘Dai you’ve got the Drennan in the bag’. I didn’t even dare to dream that this could be the case,” he told Angling Times.
“I never set out to win the Drennan Cup as I just have a passion for catching big fish.
“To have my name etched on to this trophy along with names such as Terry Lampard and Tony Gibson is just incredible.
“The Drennan Cup is special because the winner is voted for by other specimen anglers. There couldn’t be a bigger honour in big-fish angling.”
Peter Drennan said: “In any other season Tony Smith with four awards across four different species would have walked away as the overall winner.
“But a run of giant tench and most of all a truly massive 20lb plus bream drew a tiny majority of the discerning voters in favour of Dai.
“What a fantastic season both of these dedicated specimen hunters have enjoyed, so serious congratulations to them.”
Record year for roach is on the cards...
The year 2016 is set to be a record one for roach, thanks to a series of revolutionary projects to rejuvenate the species on rivers and stillwaters nationwide .
Leading the charge to revive Britain’s most iconic fish is the longest-running conservation drive – the Avon Roach Project – which has seen a record-breaking year.
Species enthusiasts Trevor Harrop and Budgie Price created the scheme to boost redfin stocks on the Hampshire Avon by installing dozens of spawning boards. Roach lay their eggs on these and the juveniles are then nurtured with the aim of later restocking them back into the river.
According to Trevor, this year has been the best for the project, launched in 2005.
“The past couple of years have been the most fruitful for us by far and 2016 is going to be a special year for the species,” he said.
“The fish we restock are now bigger and better than they have ever been, and we are producing more numbers as we have honed our techniques after 11 years of running it. The work is starting to make a real difference.”
However, the Hampshire Avon isn’t the only river with its own successful scheme to secure the future of the roach.
Other groups, including numerous river trusts, are using Trevor’s ideas as a blueprint for their own initiatives on their own waters.
One of these is the Kennet Roach Project. Run by Del Shackleford, fisheries officer for Reading DAA, it’s a project that has installed spawning boards into the Kennet for the first time and built two tanks to hold fry for restocking.
“Fish stocks, in particular roach, have been in decline on the Kennet in recent years and we wanted to do something about it, so we have been working hard with the Environment Agency to improve fish habitats on the waterway and breed more fish,” he said.
Anglers are already feeling the benefits of the projects, with clubs and fisheries up and down the country reporting bumper match and pleasure catches which have coincided with increased demand for quality silverfish sport.
And it’s not just on our rivers where anglers are crying out for more roach.
Lemington Lakes fishery is one of many stillwater venues which have cottoned on to the renewed popularity of the species.
The Gloucestershire fishery has worked tirelessly in recent years to provide some of the best roach fishing in the UK, thanks to the help of leading fisheries consultant Andrew Ellis, of AE Fisheries.
He said: “A lot of people want to fish for big roach, especially the more traditional anglers, and plenty of fisheries have started to try to provide this, including Lemington.
“We have been netting and cropping the stock at Abbey Lake to help produce some of the biggest and best fish.
“This year’s netting saw us pick out a handful of roach to 3lb 4oz – the lake has some truly stunning fish in it,” he added.
The Big Fish Off is a hit!
The buzz surrounding ‘The Big Fish Off’ reached fever pitch this week as hundreds of thousands tuned in to episode one of the new ITV series.
The first show of Series 2, screened on ITV4, set an overwhelmingly positive precedent for the rest of the collection of shows that co-presenter and executive producer Ali Hamidi says ‘will be even better’.
Bosses at the channel been delighted with the early figures, and Angling Times can revel that Ali has already signed up snooker legend Jimmy White, boxers Ricky Hatton and Kell Brook, footballer Bobby Zamora and professional darts player Adrian Lewis for future shows.
Building on the success of the first series, seen by over five million anglers and non-anglers alike, early viewing figures for the first instalment of the second series – not including those that watched it via available ‘catch-up’ facilities – have delighted everyone involved with the show.
“We couldn’t have wished for a better start for the series. We are flying high,” said Ali Hamidi.
“I had emails from the guys at ITV 4 soon after the first show hit the TV screens saying how over the moon they were with the response and the early viewing figures – you can’t do much more than that.
“There’s such a buzz about this show that celebrities wanting to star in the show are now contacting me directly. I had a twitter message from the boxer Tyson Fury, who would be perfect, but training for his up-and-coming fight with Wladimir Klitschko conflicted with possible filming dates.
“The list of guys that we’ve already earmarked for the next series just shows you what a following The Big Fish Off has, and this is only going to get bigger as series two unfolds.”
As Angling Times went to press, positive comments surrounding the second show – featuring former footballer and top TV pundit Mark Bright and fellow sports pundit DJ Spoony – were flooding social media sites including both Twitter and Facebook.
Canal tench and rudd go through their paces
You don’t need to visit a commercial to make bumper big fish catches, as Russell Hilton proved with this stunning net of tench and rudd from a canal.
The Somerset angler polefished his local Taunton Angling Association stretch of the Bridgwater & Taunton Canal, where he used chopped worm and caster to bag six tench to 4lb along with three rudd over 1lb.
Russell targeted the deeper water down the track using a 0.5g pole float, black hydro elastic and a size 14 hook.
Scot’s 36lb 8oz pike a fitting end to season
Alec Stark finished the pike fishing season in style with the capture of this 36lb 8oz specimen.
The Lanarkshire angler boated it during a Pike Anglers Club meet on Lake of Mentieth in Stirling.
It sets a new pb for the Scotsman, who tempted it from 15ft of water on a floatfished mackerel deadbait.
He said: “I knew it was big as soon as I started to play it and I struggled to get it to the surface let alone on the boat.
“Thankfully my boat partner Barry Gillien helped me lift it out of the water before releasing it.”
Linear tench triumph
An early-season tench fishing session proved successful for Matt Perring when he slipped the net under nine fish, topped by this 8lb 12oz specimen.
The Marukyu-sponsored angler had an inkling the tench would be on the feed with the arrival of warmer weather and headed to Oxfordshire’s Linear Fisheries.
There Matt targeted a gravel bar 45 yards out, fishing a worm hookbait over a bed of hemp and casters doused in Marukyu Amino Plus flavouring.
Matt’s catch, taken on a helicopter feeder rig, also included tench of 8lb 4oz and 7lb 1oz, as well as three others over 6lb.
Massive mirror takes to the air
This 48lb 6oz Rockford mirror tailwalked like a pike as it tried in vain to escape Dan Pestell’s clutches.
“It was slowly plodding and shaking its head before blistering off on a 50-yard run,” said Dan. “At one point she jumped out of the water like a pike, shaking her head from side to side and trying to throw the hook. It was mental!”
The fish was caught along with a 34lb 2oz mirror known as the Rudder as Dan enjoyed a social session on the western bank of the Hampshire big-fish water.
Having found a silty area at the back of a gravel bar just over 100 yards out, Dan watched the fish give away their location.
He said: “That afternoon the fish put on an impressive display, crashing and rolling out of the lake at mega range. It looked good for a bite but most of the shows were slightly to the left of the zone. I grew quietly confident a few fish might venture a bit closer on the wind.”
Rudder came at 5am the next day, and the big mirror at 3pm.
“On the scales she weighed a mind-blowing 48lb 6oz,” said Dan. “I was elated! Her condition was pristine and she glowed orange and cream in the sun.”
The fish took CC Moore Pacific Tuna pop-ups mounted on hinged stiff rigs tied with size 5 ESP Cryogen Stiff Riggers.
Rudd Danish style
Big rudd don’t come much more impressive than this 2lb 8oz specimen banked by Morten Vorup Svarer during his latest session.
The Danish angler went in search of big roach on a waterway in his homeland, but with his target species refusing to play ball, he switched his attentions to the resident rudd.
It was a ploy that worked almost instantly, with three fish over 2lb falling to his feederfished corn and worm hookbaits before the biggest of the day graced his net.
Mid-Kent giant Swirly follows after big storm
A stormy night spent holding on to his brolly was made worth it for Liam Fagg as he banked this beautiful common the following morning.
The 44lb 10oz lump, known as the Swirly Common, came during Storm Katie at Mid Kent Fisheries’ Pan Lake.
Liam bagged a 28lb 1oz common on Good Friday of the Bank Holiday weekend within an hour of setting up, then packed up and returned to the lake on Easter Sunday.
He said: “My arrival coincided with Storm Katie, a big low-pressure system loaded with severe storm-force winds and rains.
“At 11pm I got a take that resulted in a 24lb 2oz common, so I wound in my middle rod and repositioned the two rods on the bite area, which was a nice silt channel.
“I then spent the rest of the night wide awake holding on to the brolly as the storm gathered and gave its all. At 10.30am the middle rod screamed off and a heavy plodding fight followed.
“When I at last got to see the fish I knew I was attatched to a common of serious proportions.
“As those proportions made their way over the spreader block it became apparent that I’d caught Swirly.
“After a rest for me and the fish, weighing and photos were done and she went 44lb 10oz!”
Liam used Key Bait Solutions boilies.
4lb perch by the shedload
One of the greatest perch seasons on record shows no signs of letting up with a flurry of giants providing another prolific week for the species.
The stunning image on the right shows Chris Lowe with his 4lb 8oz fish taken on his first cast into a stillwater in Yorkshire.
Chris’s initial target was pike, but after discovering his intended quarry were spawning he turned his attentions to a venue that he hadn’t fished for five months and set his sights on perch with jigging tackle.
The Savage Gear consultant from Birmingham admitted that the bright, flat calm conditions didn’t fill him with confidence of hooking a big ‘stripey’ but he was soon cradling a new personal best after the specimen took a liking to his Savage Gear T-Tail.
“I got home and unloaded all my pike fishing tackle and sat in the house thinking about fishing.
“I just had to get back out there,” said Chris.
“The perch gear was quickly in the car and shortly after arriving at the water I cast my lure out to a spot at around 20 yards from the bank. I made one jigging motion with the rod and bang… it was on.
“It was an absolute beast and my legs started to go as soon as soon as it came over the net. The girth of the fish was something else and I’m so glad I made the effort to get back out after the pike weren’t playing ball.”
Pike fishing legend Gord Burton likes nothing better than exploring the wide range of canals Up North and he came up trumps when he banked his biggest-ever perch from one of these waters.
The ‘Piking Pirate’ from Southport, Lancs, landed his third perch over the 4lb mark when he slipped the net under this specimen that weighed 4lb on the nose.
He fooled the fish with a 7cm Fox Rage Spikey Shad fished with 8lb braid threaded through the eyes of a 40g jigging rod.
“I got the fish in the net and left it with my mate as I ran back to the car to get the camera, and when I returned I said ‘how big was it’? to which he replied ‘it’s 4lb exactly’ I was blown away,” Gord told Angling Times.
“The canals around this way are full of big perch and pike, yet few people give them a go.
“I lost another huge perch later in the same session and a guy who lives on one of the houseboats told me that he’s had perch to 5lb 3oz off here.”
It hasn’t just been waters in the north of the UK that have been in top form for big perch, as Leicester’s Joe Oakes targeted a venue in the Midlands to smash his perch personal best with a 4lb specimen.
It came as part of a 25-fish haul that included many fish to 1lb. All fell to a 5cm shad fished on a braided mainline, a fluorocarbon leader and a size 12 hook.
“My previous personal best for the species was 3lb 8oz but I always knew that this venue held much bigger perch. It was just a matter of time until I caught one.”

Two 50lb carp in a weekend
Wellington Country Park threw up two 50lb-plus commons to the same angler in a magical 24-hour spell.
David Gaskin broke his personal best twice with the capture of the Chestnut Common at 52lb 6oz and then the Chinese Common at 53lb 6oz. He also had a 33lb 8oz common and a single-figure carp during the weekend session.
Arriving at dawn at the Berkshire syndicate water, David set up in a swim known for its long-range action, but dropped two rods shorter to cope with impending high winds. He said: “I chose two different spots closer in, one at 80 yards and one at 50 yards, so I could bait up easily even in high winds.
“Just on dark, storm clouds were gathering when I had a slow, creeping take on the short rod. I couldn’t really see where the fish was heading. I found myself coaxing it through tree roots along the margin but luckily my tackle held firm and the fish was in the net.”
After weighing the 52lb 6oz specimen, David waited until daylight to recast the rod accurately in the strengthening winds. That afternoon, the same rod was away again.
“After what can only be described as a brutal battle, another special fish was squeezed over the net cord and I couldn’t believe my luck. I had another colossal common in the net, which hadn’t been caught in a while, so there was a lot of speculation over its potentially huge weight.
“My first outing on CC Moore Pacific Tuna boilies had resulted in two personal bests and a brace of UK 50lb-plus commons in less than 24hours. I was astonished.”
David presented his pop-up hookbaits on size 4 Gardner Mugga hooks.
Lottery grant will lift club
“We’ve been given a huge lottery grant to improve our fishery. It was so easy I don’t know why so many other clubs haven’t done the same.”
The words of Brian Billings, secretary for Audley Parish Angling Club, a group which has recently been awarded thousands of pounds after applying for a free grant.
The Staffordshire group got their hands on the much-needed cash just three months after applying to the Big Lottery Fund, a scheme which provides millions of pounds to community-based projects across the UK.
They plan to spend the money, £10,000 in all, on improving access for disabled anglers, as well as building a number of wheelchair- friendly pegs at their Bates Wood fishery in Newcastle-Under-Lyme. Now Brian is encouraging other clubs and community projects to follow suit.
“The money will be a huge help and we are encouraging other clubs to do the same,” said Brian. “We will be able to do work which we otherwise couldn’t afford, considering we are a club with just 140 members. We run a lot of junior events here but many less abled locals are denied the facility because of poor access.
“Thanks to this grant the facilities will become available for all to use and share.”
Another club who successfully applied to the scheme are Blackburn-based Southwest Angling & Sports Association. They were awarded just under £50,000 last year to turn their once-derelict pond into a community-based angling haven.
Club committee member Gary Hennigan is encouraging other clubs to follow their lead and apply.
“It’s fairly simple to apply online as long as you have a good plan of what you want to achieve and in what time frame you are in with a chance of being awarded some cash” he said.
Both clubs are open for new members – search for them on Facebook for more details.
River monsters returns to TV
The best-ever year for angling on TV just got better with the brand new series of ‘River Monsters’ with Jeremy Wade hitting our screens.
The action kicked off last week and the legendary extreme angler didn’t disappoint, with a host of adrenaline-fuelled encounters with some of the world’s most fearsome predators.
In one of the most daring River Monsters expeditions to date, series 7 comprises six programmes from Icon Films that see the biologist ride a physical and emotional rollercoaster as he dives into the lairs of man-eating monsters in hazardous waters. Along with new adventures he revisits places where he has yet to catch the infamous monsters of local legend.
From hunting an unknown ‘mutilator’ along the shores of the Mekong river in Asia, to terrifying encounters with crocodiles and the fearsome tiger fish in Africa, the gripping series also follows Jeremy through awe-inspiring adventures in Canada, Fiji and Alaska.
Jeremy was midway through a press tour in the US when Angling Times caught up with him and asked him to reveal his best moments from the new series. “One highlight was having a go after muskie, the legendary fish of 10,000 casts. What eventually transpired was one of my most memorable catches ever,” he said.
“Nothing was going my way, it just wasn’t working... until the very last minute, having practically given up, when things suddenly turned almost unbelievably in my favour.
“I also had a hands-on encounter with a big halibut. I wanted to get one in, have a good look at it, then release it undamaged. The boat skipper didn’t think this was possible (or advisable) with a 100lb-plus fish, and as far as I know it hasn’t been done before.
“I also observe tigerfish underwater in Botswana, and travel back in time to encounter some river monsters from the dawn of life on Earth.”
In the all-new ‘River Monsters: Prehistoric Terror’ the crew follow Jeremy as he finds out about some of the most ‘terrifying monsters of all time.’

Ticket sales ‘best yet’ on top fisheries
A host of the UK’s biggest fisheries reported record day-ticket sales as 2016 shapes up to be one to remember.
Thousands of anglers hit the bank over the Easter weekend and two of the biggest commercial fisheries in the land, South Yorkshire match complex Lindholme Lakes and Linear Fisheries in Oxfordshire, are among dozens of UK venues which saw day-ticket sales rocket.
On the eight-lake specimen complex, every one of Linear’s 250 day-ticket pegs were taken up for the first two days of the weekend as the fishery struggled to deal with demand.
Fishery manager Chris Blunt told Angling Times: “Easter has always seen our banks busy with anglers but this Easter has been our busiest ever.
“With 50-60 syndicate members also fishing we had more than 300 anglers on the venue at one point. It was incredible, and I’ve heard other fisheries also did very well during the same period.
“The mild winter and good spring weather has seen carp stay on the feed. This meant catches have improved on previous years, and this in turn has attracted more anglers to our venue.
“We have also been proactive on the internet and social media to keep our customers in the know and encourage more visits.”
Just a week after announcing plans to increase the size of the venue by building new lakes and holiday lodges, Lindholme boss Neil Grantham also enjoyed a bumper weekend at the Doncaster fishery.
“Match bookings, festival and winter league numbers have gone up this year and the number of pleasure anglers we got over Easter alone was better than ever. Low fuel prices and mild weather have helped dramatically with numbers” he said.
The news will come as a massive boost to organisations and charities attempting to get more people into fishing, and with a number of fisheries and clubs working on improvements over the winter period, angling looks set to enjoy a bumper summer ahead.
Huge crucian best of year
This is the biggest crucian of the year weighing 4lb 2oz, topping an amazing haul of specimens.
It was a catch that included no fewer than seven 3lb-plus fish and was made by big-fish man Adam Perna during a two-night session on a Southern stillwater.
The Oxfordshire angler netted a total of 10 fish during the trip, including another weighing 3lb 12oz, after opting for a no-feed minimalist approach using just a 35g Method feeder with a single artificial white caster hair-rigged to a size 16 hook.
“Despite seeing others spodding out loads of feed, with it being so early in the year and the water still pretty cold I decided against feeding anything other than the fishmeal groundbait and 2mm pellets on my feeder. The fish can end up having too much bait to get through when everyone is feeding so heavily,” said Adam.
The session began slowly as he took just two 2lb-plus fish on the first night, but a switch from a darker imitation caster to the white variety on the second night sent his alarms into overdrive as fish after fish made off with his hookbait.
The icing was put on the cake early on the final morning when Adam landed the biggest crucian of his magical haul to set a new personal best by just 1oz.
“I have been fishing the lake for three years but this year all the hard work and research is starting to pay off,” he continued.
“Catching a 4lb-plus fish feels great, especially at this time of the year when the fish are yet to bulk up prior to spawning.
“The fishing should be even better later in the year and I wouldn’t be at all surprised if the crucian record was broken this summer as the fish are getting bigger every year.”
- The current UK crucian record is 4lb 10oz, jointly held by Michael James and Stephen Frapwell, with both captures occurring in May last year.
