Venue first is a cracking 32lb 10oz mirror
LUKE Vallory’s wait to catch his first carp from a pressured Lea Valley club water came to a welcome end when he slipped the net under this cracking 32lb 10oz mirror.
The fish was the highlight of a two night session on the venue, after the 22-year-old self-employed Hertfordshire-based angler moved swims.
“I’d done a few overnighters this winter and a handful last spring but without any joy,” he told Angling Times.
Despite the weather report predicting temperatures of 10 degrees, the Sticky Baits-backed rod initially set up at the furthest end of the lake, in a swim which offered deeper water, in hope the fish would be residing there due to cold night-time conditions. But after an uneventful first night he decided to up sticks and move to a shallower area of the lake.
“I flicked a light lead around the swim and found mostly weed and silt. To ensure complete accuracy, I clipped both rods up to a spot at 30 yards and after much contemplation, decided to fish hinged-stiff rigs, to provide the best possible presentation of my Sticky White Chocolate 16mm pop-up hookbaits in the soft silt.”
Just before first light, his move paid dividends, when the right-hand-rod – fished over half a kilo of Vor-Tex boilies – rattled off and after a spirited battle he scooped up his prize.
He added: “The fact that a third of the lake was frozen, which made the catch even sweeter.”

Junior hauls in 33lb leather carp
Charlie Terry couldn’t have asked for better first fish from the eight acre southern gravel pit which he’s recently started targeting than this cracking 33lb 1oz leather.
The Nash Bait junior fieldtester fished towards a weedbed at 20 yards range which he baited with a scattering of Monster Squid Red readymade boilies.
“There was a part of the lake which was on the back of the wind and had the sun on it for the majority of the day,” the 15-year-old West Sussex-based schoolboy told Angling Times. “I had a feeling that the carp would feel comfortable in this area and sure enough, in the early hours of the morning I could hear fish crashing out over the spot. Shortly after, one of my alarms burst in to life and after a really hard fight I eventually got the better of the fish.
His hookbait was offered on a Chod rig tied with a 20lb stiff hooklink material, a size 8 Nash Fang Twister hook and a 1oz pear lead on Core Plus leader.
Female angler dominates Passies Pond match
Match angling may be dominated by men but Samantha Sim proved the ladies have also got the skills to fish against the best by winning the latest round of the Passies Ponds silverfish league with 52lb 8oz.
The Preston Innovations Delcac rod used the pole at various lengths at the West Sussex complex with maggot and pellet to tempt plenty of bream to 4lb along with a brace of bonus perch.
Second place was taken by her team mate Jamie Grainger who used a similar attack for a 46lb 6oz haul.
Top angler reveals 'smelly pellets' approach
Ever wondered what the best flavourings on the market are for bagging up at this time of year?
If you have then that quandary is about to be quashed after top angler Dale Calvert trialled a number of offerings while pellet fishing and whittled it down to two that have produced staggering results.
The Middy-backed angler has been trying to get an edge over his rivals in recent weeks and he has now become the ‘top rod’ on a number of fisheries thanks to his latest findings.
“Both additives are equally effective and I’m convinced they are the difference between catching a few fish and getting a bite almost every drop,” explained Dale.
For more details on his successful approach, pick up a copy of next week’s Angling Times, on the shelves from Tuesday March 26.
Angler banks foul-hooked 182lb skate
Landing a huge skate is a brutal task in itself but Peter Ross was forced to endure a battle of almost an hour before banking a 182lb fish which was foul hooked!
After deciding to fish off the coast of Ballylumford in Northern Ireland, he put two rods out for the species and received a take just after midday.
Upon picking the rod up he was met by a solid resistance and after a lengthy battle he was given a big surprise.
“A dogfish had taken my mackerel hookbait and then the skate tried to eat that and became foul hooked in the process,” explained Peter.

Bury Hill Fisheries produces big carp haul
A frantic five hour period saw Mark Potterton net six carp to 25lb during his latest session at Bury Hill Fisheries.
The Surrey-based rod decided to target peg 32 on the Old Lake and covered his options by using a trio rods to use a KD rig, muzza rig and Snowman setup.
It proved to be an inspired move as all three produced action, with several specimens to 21lb coming to the net before the big mirror was banked.

UK angler hauls in mammoth blue marlin
A 25-year campaign to land one of the world’s largest exotic species came to an end for Kevin Gardner when he banked a mammoth 1320lb blue marlin.
The Norfolk-based pub landlord made the long haul trip to Ascension Island in the Atlantic Ocean and used a lure to attract the attentions of the beast.
He was then forced to endure an energy sapping three-hour battle before it was beaten.
Controversially, the fish was brought back to land dead and the snout was hacked off to be taken back to the UK as a trophy.
Canal drought ends with 21lb specimen
Andrew Longstaff has endured numerous blank sessions this winter targeting the carp in a local canal, but his perseverance was eventually rewarded with this cracking 21lb common.
Despite the lack of action over the past couple of months, the Somerset-based rod kept the bait going in to the waterway on a regular basis.
The fish came during a short day session on the venue and fell to a 16mm bottom bait boilie. He said: “This is the first carp to be caught from the canal this year so I was really pleased. It just shows that if you put the effort in the rewards are there to be had.”

Several familiar names such as Steve Ringer and Adam Wakelin will take part, although there are debuts for the lines of Nick Speed, Will Freeman and Eddie Bridon.

Drain produces huge 12lb 14oz zander
Over £2,000 in winnings was handed out during the latest pike match on the Twenty Foot Drain but the event will be remembered most for this stunning 12lb 14oz zander which was banked by Andrew Carter.
The keen predator angler had been taking part in the big money pairs event which was staged close to Beggars Bridge on the Cambridgeshire venue and managed to receive the all-important run after he presented a roach deadbait at close range.
Unfortunately, the fish wasn't eligible to go towards his final weight, with Nottinghamshire’s Ken Edgson and Rod Newton taking home £1540 after they banked a brace of predators for 26lb 13oz. They also took the biggest pike of the day, with Ken weighing in a 22lb 1oz specimen.
