How to use raw meat to catch big chub and barbel

To keep catching quality chub and barbel from any river in the midst of winter takes some doing, so when we had a chance to meet Mark Perkins on the banks of the Newark Dyke to see how he does it, we couldn't refuse.

He's had a string of huge winter chub and barbel from both the Newark Dyke and the main River Trent using his unique bait approach.

Rather than struggle through the winter using the baits that anglers have used throughout the year, Mark switches to using a variety of raw meats - something he learned was extremely successful during the 1980s.

In this explanatory video below, Mark details the exact bait approach he adopts and shows just how to get the most from his bloody array of fish attractors...

How to fish the Method feeder for big chub, barbel and silver fish nets

Staffordshire's Cudmore Fisheries is home to a vast array of pools containing a huge head of hungry mirros and commons, but it is the carp-free Milo Lake that has proved the most visited in recent weeks, every peg giving 100lb-plus hauls of tench, bream, chub and barbel.

In the thick of the action is Dave Smith. The Bag'Em Baits ace has been emptying the water on a weekly basis and has concocted a number of deadly approaches to get the most out of his swim.

Here Angling Tiems reporter Tony Grigorjevs caught up with the match angler to find out just how he's managed to catch so many of the lake's silver fish.

New Tri-Cast John Allerton float rod

John Allerton won countless fishing matches using stick and waggler floats which he guided with a dexterity that defied belief.

The subtle fish-playing qualities of a fine three-piece match rod are wasted on many modern day commercial match anglers, so the chances of them coughing up for one that carries a £200-plus price tag are remote, to say the least.

But put that same rod into the hands of a discerning journeyman angler, who regularly fishes rivers in the search for chub or roach, and you wil;l see his face light up with an expression borne of knowing that what he is holding is indeed very special.

And that one word 'special' pretty much describes exactly what this new Tri-Cast John Allerton 13ft match waggler rod is all about.

Mark Sawyer took a sample of this new float rod to the banks of the River Gipping in Suffolk to put it through its paces, wading through the river to access a lovely run downstream of a weir.

We caught his antics and verdict on video, which can be played by clicking the image below.

How to catch big canal chub

Angling Times can this week unveil the country's best big-fish canal, following a succession of large chub in the 5lb to 6lb class reported in matches and pleasure fishing sessions.

The Staffs-Worcester canal has seen an explosion of chub in recent years after the species was initially stocked 15 years ago by Wolverhampton Angling Association, which controls much of its 46-mile total length.

One of the best stretches is the Awbridge length near the village of Trysull, between Wolverhampton and Bridgnorth, where there have been rumours of a 7lb 2oz chub.

One man who knows the potential of this canal is Garbolino-sponsored Scott Geens, who once caught a chub here during the Division 1 National weighing 6lb 4oz.

We met up with Scott on the towpath to film how he tackles this great canal. To watch the video click on the image below.

How to catch big weights of chub

Angling Times can this week lift the lid on the country's greatest chub lake, after the angler we sent to tackle it caught 86 chub to 4lb for 150lb!

The venue is Mill Road Lakes, in Skegness, Lincolnshire, and following winning catches of 99lb and 104lb to local man Ken Twigg, we sent one of the country's top matchmen, Steve Winter, to show how to crack it.

It is the water's Square Lake which has been red hot recently and this is where Steve, a member of the Maver Bait-Tech squad, set up.

He knew that Kewn had caught all his fish on the bottom, feeding heavily with maggots and hemp, so this was to be his plan A but, like all good anglers, he was prepared to change tactics to suit conditions and the way the fish were responding to the bait.

In this video below, Steve shows exactly how he goes about catchign these chub, detailing his rigs, feeding tactics and techniques.

Jamie Cartwright banks 8lb 1oz chub and 33lb 8oz pike

Jamie Cartwright put the finishing touches to a golden month in his big-fish angling career this week when he banked a massive 8lb 1oz chub from the Great Ouse.

The Northampton rod smashed his personal best by more than 1lb after tempting the fish on a cheesepaste hook bait from a club-owned stretch of the river.

The capture comes just four weeks to the day after the 33-year-old banked a brace of 30lb-plus pike from Chew Valley lake in Somerset, and a fortnight after he took a memorable hit of specimen roach comprising four 'threes' to 3lb 13oz in a single session.

His stunning personal best chub and personal best pike were both captured on film which we are proud to air right here, on Gofishing.co.uk.
